Need advice on CVT mods
« on: November 07, 2017, 04:46:42 PM »
So Im gonna do some work on my 2013 Z6-EX before taking it out to New Mexico next month for a week long ride near Carlsbad. Its all stock right now with the stock Abuzz tires. Its lagging a little on take off power and I want to re-clock secondary clutch and want to know what would be best, and I already have a Gates CVT belt for it, and Id like to swap the stock rollers for sliders all at the same time. I believe the stock roller weight is 25g but what size are they or if anyone has a link to them. And lastly, Ive heard several people talk about replacing the stock spring on the secondary since I guess fatigue(or cheap materials) causes it to get weak so Id like to do that while im in there since a new one is only $25 from Alpha sports. They list two different ones though, part numbers: 0180-052003 PRESSURE SPRING MC -CF, and 0180-052003-0003 PRESSURE SPRING -CF. They are two different springs for the same part so Im guessing one is stiffer than the other so any input on which one to get? Also doing a bunch of maintenance before going out with all fluids, valve adjustment, spark plug, etc. Already have a new air filter and new brake pads all around.

Rollers/sliders are 30x18 25g is stock. Stay with it or 24g but top end will drop apx 10mph
New spring is -0003 might as well being so inexpensive
C1 would be my recommendation for the secondary

If you are staying with stock size tires I might stay with 25g sliders and go to B2

With a 600 B2 might be a bit too much. Most with Z6s seem to like C1. But can always test both and see. Not like it costs anything but time.

I would think the less power of the Z6 would like the B2 better as it would be staying in lower gear longer. Are you saying they don't have to power to get to full shift out?

Well..not sure. Just that some that have gone to B2 with 600s went back to C1 for some reason.

hmm, interesting. I would assume they lost too much top end maybe not getting full shift out.

I did loose a little bit of top end at a1. It could still use more backshift so c1 would be my limit with stock tires. A1 with 24g sliders was like being stuck in some sort of mid gear so I wouldn't recommend it of you want to go over 35mph.

Tore into it this afternoon and did an oil change, valve adjustment, spark plug change, and changed the cvt belt for the gates I bought awhile back. I started trying to reclock the secondary but I spent so much time doing everything else I just didnt have time to do it. The sliders were in good shape and the stock belt wasnt bad. I will just live with the stock secondary for now. I had to pull the bed and all the body panels behind the seats to access everything for the valve adjustment but I didnt have to pull the panel by the battery tray and I figure I would need to do that to get an impact back there and another 30 min to do that, plus the time it would take to reclock it, just wasnt happening right now. I also changed the stock winch cable for a new, slightly thicker one, and I still need to change the front and rear diff fluid and put new rear tires on since the old ones have plugs in them and keep going flat. Also cleaned my uni air filter.

Frankysfree,

What was the part # for the Gates CVT belt? How did it compare to the factory belt you removed....width, length. I have a 2014 and am looking for a spare belt.
Thanks Coloradocrawler

Going out to the hill country in Texas for Memorial Day weekend and finally got around to pulling everything apart. Looks like right now Im at B1. Is that stock? Im going to reclock to C1 tomorrow and keep the stock sliders. Still stock tires and stock everything else. Needing a little more low end power which is why im reclocking.

B1 is factory. C1 is fine with all factory tires and the 600s like it best.
