Connecting to ECU with K-Line diagnostic tool

I ordered a K-Line to USB adapter and made an adapter to connect pins 4, 7 and 16 to ground, K-Line and 12v.  I have been unsuccessful in getting a connection to the ECU thru HUD ECU hacker.  I have an older 2013 z6 and was wondering if anyone has had success in getting a PC connected to one of these machines.
