Charging issues?
« on: July 31, 2017, 11:12:09 PM »
Hi everyone,  new to this forum and hope someone can help me out. I have a 2013 z6 ex zforce with 1700 miles on it. I had it out cutting firewood a couple of weeks ago it was acting like it wanted to shut off so I left it run while I was sawing wood, when I shut the saw off my buggy wasn't running.  I tried to start it and I could hear the solenoid clicking, but the fuel pump wasnt turning on,got pulled home and tried crossing the solenoid with a screw driver and it started and the fuel pump kicks on? I checked the  fuses and replaced the solenoid and it still clicked,  battery was low so I charged it and it was fine. Rode it for about 10 miles and it started to get sluggish at about quarter throttle,  pulled over for a while and got back in and the solenoid clicked again,  tried again and it started right up? Rode for another mile or so,  shut it off and came back an hour or so later and the solenoid clicked again and wouldn't start!, I jumped the solenoid with a screwdriver again and it started. Drove it home and checked the battery and it was at 11.35 volts, charged the battery again and it was at 13.54 volts?  Seams like the battery is good but my buggy isn't charging the battery?  Battery terminals are clean, any info in the right direction would be greatly appreciated

Might still be the battery. I would load test it. My dirty check is to charge it up than try the starter than check the voltage again. A bad battery will drop voltage just from tapping the starter. Mine will still start by bridging the solenoid even if the battery is near dead.

Ok I'll load test it today,  the volts are lower when it's running and the lights are on. Thanks I'll post the results

That usually means there is a charging issue. Check the rectifier/regulator and the stator per the manual...and see if the battery will take a full charge. Put it on a charger for a day or so.

The battery checks to be good. The stator is on the passenger side correct?  Where is the regulator/rectifier? Which wires do I check?

11-3 in the manual has the rectifier. I can't remember where it is. Maybe passenger rear frame.

I found it behind the plastics behind the passenger seat,  the book I got with my cfmoto is crap, alot of the pages are half cut off like it wasn't copied right and just slapped together.  Do I need to splice into the wires? Red and white wire and the green wire? What should the reading be? 12v? Thanks for the help

We have the real shop manual here...free..just download it. No the reading from the stator won't be 12V...more like maybe 200VAC..(just a guess).. across two leads. Its a three phase A/C system. This is why you need the shop manual.

It goes over ohm and voltage on a chart in chapter 11.

Are the 600 and 625 the same other than engine displacement?

As I understand it, yes, exactly the same.

When the buggy is running and I disconnect the battery it shuts off,  if it's charging shouldn't it stay running?

It should but.. that's a fast way to kill a rectifier/regulator too. What have the tests told you?

Haven't found out yet, not very good at using a multimeter / knowing what settings are what.  Guessing I would need to remove some of the coating on the wire to test?

No, it will tell you what pins in what connectors to test.
