Having trouble starting when engine is warm
« on: March 17, 2021, 11:25:45 AM »
A few months back I started having issues with starting when the engine is warm. If the engine is cold it starts right up even after a month but if it's warm it starts up then immediately stalls after the starter shuts off (this happens like 4 times out of 5), it takes 2-3 tries to get it started (giving it a little gas also works). It also idles a bit rough after the engine has warmed up, it sounds like it's skipping revs. Does anyone know why this could be?

Likely the idle air valve or TPS. But check all the basics first.

Thanks, do these need replacing or should I check the connections or something else?

Lots of potential reasons requiring good diagnostic tests.

Start with the basics like spark plugs and tight connections. I've read a lot about hard starting issues that have been fixed with a valve lash adjustment or new plugs. A compression test would be worthwhile during the effort.

If those things check out, look for things that would trigger a lean condition, like giving the T-MAP a squirt of cleaner. The lack of available scanners makes it difficult to check EFI control sensors like engine temp, TPS, IAC, etc ... so it might be worth a trip to the dealer if the simple stuff doesn't address the issue.

The spark plug is clean, I've checked that some time ago. The ATV was involved in a slight rollover (by slight I mean it was tipped over while getting over a bigger rock doing like 3mph) and oil came back up through the air filter, could this be a result of that?

Perhaps. Did the starting problem occur right after that event?

 What year is the machine?

The starting problem yes, around that time but I'm not sure about the idling.
It's a 2016 model.

UPDATE: The problem seems to have remediated itself, haven't noticed any problems with starting for more than a month now.
