Hey guys. Starting to get a shudder on take off on my Z1000. The other day I was out riding with a buddy of mine and when trying to cross a tough obstacle I may have smoked the belt. At the moment I was stupidly in high range revving and trying to get over a rock. When I took my foot off the gas a bunch of smoke came in to the cabin. Since then, whenever I'm in high range it shudders when I take off. Low range works fine. Any thoughts?

Well, yes, you have smoked the belt and probably scared a spot on the primary. You will need a new belt now and hopefully that spot can be  cleaned up. Expensive lesson..but it can and does happen to most everyone at one time or another. The belt's probably started coming apart so..better get one soon. If not it's glazed beyond repair. 

Well, been looking for a new belt and can't seem to find one. Does anyone know if the belt for the 800 will fit the 1000?

Hey amberclad, a friend of mine smoked the belt on his 1000 also, and talked a
manufacturer and crossed it over to an aftermarket belt, I don't remember who
but I'll find out and post.

Pretty sure it's going to be different as the clutching is different... I would inspect it..even take some scotchbrite to the glazed edges, get a full set of measurements then contact people like Gates or Ultimax to see if something can be matched-up. Just food for thought- the CFM 800 was an indirect copy of the Rotax 800...and the CFM 1000 is based on the 800's design. The Rotax engines use a clutching system much like the new CFM 1000. Wouldn't it funny of the belt for the Rotax 800 or 1000 fit the CFM 1000.

I'm sure CFM will want 300+ for their belt. We all went with a Gates for about a third that. In the meantime Ultimax does offer this size chart for their belts.

So I took the CVT cover off and the belt is indeed glazed but not fraying or coming apart. How long do you guys think I could ride on a glazed belt? Have a trip coming up soon and wondering if I can get away with holding off on the repair until afterwards.

That shutter is partly caused by the loss of friction between the belt and the clutch as it actually slips in that zone. That slippage is taking it's toll on the clutch. Sense it's gone anyway, take some 360-400g sand paper on a block to the edges of the belt where glazed (probably all the way around), then follow-up with a scotchbrite pad, then wipe down with a clean cotton cloth with acetone..don't saturate  the belt with acetone as it will add to the possibility of separation. Also gently with a elliptical motion work that block across the scaring on the clutch followed with ..you guessed it, the scotchbrite pad then acetone on a clean rag.

You should know that if the glazing or burning is very deep...deep enough that you can't clear it with the sandpaper in a few strokes, it's pointless to try. If you are successful, either way, better stay off the power of that 1K until you get that new belt. Toasted belts can snap with one flick of the throttle.

A lot of Maine is slow technical stuff anyway so don't have much of a chance to open her up. Sorry for all the questions, kind of a noob to all this.

Yes, low range will put far less stress on the belt so use it all you can for now. If you need to run above say..20mph for a stretch use high and ease it up there. Remember, if it breaks...it will probably be a Polaris that pulls you back...so be careful...lol   

I think your primary clutch will be OK but be aware though, don't use anything metallic when you go to deglaze the belt, no SOS or steel wool. The thumpa thumpa could be glaze caused slip or it could be the belt is a hair narrower on the spot where it slipped and smoked, or both. It'll be hard to tell with the naked eye.

I believe belt slammers should come with a speech to new buyers about the dangers of slip and the wisdom of using low range where appropriate.
I saw a woman one day on a Polaris on a big multi machine group ride, she was stopped on her quad on a little hill and was holding the machine from rolling back by using the throttle, while she sat and chatted with some people standing there! Lady, you're doing a brakestand on your belt, you realize...
She didn't. She just thought it's like her car, you can just apply throttle to hold it on a hill.
No one had ever told her otherwise.

My GF did this once in my Z800. Even tho its not a belt slammer I still don't want unnecessary to wear the wet clutch... She was promptly taught.
