Is 143 Hp enough?
« on: October 13, 2024, 10:24:05 AM »
I'm guessing that a good number of first time owners of the Z10 will be first time sport utv owners.
My experience with the 4-seater at 107 HP has been more than sufficient in the dunes as well.
That being said, I would wait another year from this spring if I knew for certain that a 64" car with 212 HP would be available as rumored (the space for an intercooler might already be engineered in to the present motor).
Keep in mind that I haven't felt for myself what 143 HP hooking up feels like in this car over varied terrain.
The latter is all that I'm really interested in given the average speeds that we travel where we would ride most.

My only experience with a higher-HP machine was a 2019 Yamaha YXZ 1000r...which is about 112HP. I didn't drive it but my friend took me around the mesa and dunes for about a half an hour. I'll be honest, I was scared shitless at first at the insane power and speed of this thing. After a bit...when I was pretty sure we weren't going to be killed..and my brain stopped being slammed to the back of my skull..it became awesome to have that kind of abilities...although for me I would never have any use for it. So 143-212 is unfathomable to me...and for sure way too much for any first-timer. Heck that 112 would be too much for any novas operator....IMO.

Agreed regarding all points made above and my own (albeit limited)experience.
A couple of friends (somewhere in their 20's) of my neighbor's son bought two of those machines when they first hit the market. They too offered me a ride and I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
Even the mere thought of me riding no control shotgun in a positive gear drive paddle shift two-seater at whatever width that they were and at that HP level was enough for me. At that time, I was in a 4-seater at 107 and had just come from a 50" SxS at less than half that HP which was thrilling enough. We rented one of the latter out of Marysville,UT on the Paiute Trail up to 10,000 feet/back down and had no 'power' issues whatsoever even then.

What's different when you talk 4-seaters and these wider/longer/more advanced/suspended cars nowadays is obviously the extra weight and how these advances temper the necessary learning curve...which I would argue is highly questionable given today's driver and their basic off-road experience. I would agree 100% that a newbie has no business whatsoever in any of these cars for obvious reasons. I'm not even sure how long it would take an XYZer with practically no experience 'outside' period or in a garage beyond a bicycle that they never road or fixed (the vast majority?) to be rightfully hauling others around if their goal was to even slightly push the limit of these pre or post XP-era sport utvs. Heck, a good share of them were busy getting the Rhino almost banned not that long ago.
I would want the 212 just to have all that power in short bursts yet I'm almost resigned to being highly blessed to (possibly?) get one of these first 143 HP Z10s. The way that the world is headed presently and with this don't ask/don't tell crap going on involving this 'ban'(?)...I'm not even sure that anyone will ever own one anyways or bother with putting a deposit down on one given present circumstances.
