SVT Problem? Or something else?
« on: March 08, 2021, 11:49:25 AM »
2020 Z950.

Before I call the dealer for a service diagnoses.

When in high range at low rpm taking off if I try to take off normal it will jerk back a forth like the SVT is kicking in and out and will sometimes make a clunking noise.  the engine kind of feels like it could be electrical like what it does when you don't have your seat belt attached.  Now if I get into it and give it over 3000 rpm it doesn't do it, it just takes off.  I noticed it does it in low range and in reverse but not as bad because the rpms are higher.

Ideas are appreciated

SVT/Belt?
Electrical?
Other?

How it only has 33 miles on it.  I have had it for 7 mo but I just hadn't had time to get it out much.  According to the 1 yr warranty the CVT/belt is only covered for 90 days.

Those symptoms, if mechanical only, would indicate burned/glazed or flat spots on the belt which happens when the belt is not moving but the primary is applying pressure to it. It can also be a problem with the primary as in its coming loose so..both needs checked right away. If electrical or engine-related it could be a bad TPS or idle-air valve. Both have been known to be a problem with CFMs. If you have a good shop...I would recommend taking it in...if nothing else to ensure the warranty stays intact.

Thanks for the input.  I will call the dealer and get it scheduled to be looked at.

Mine kind of does this when it’s cold but levels out when it warms up. The drive by wire seems to be a little touchy and the cold makes it worse.  When I’m in sport mode it seems to be worse.  Does it do it in both eco and sport? The noise may just be the clutches releasing quickly.

Either way, for peace of mind, have the dealer check it out.

I first noticed it in Sport mode but I did switch it to ECO and still did it.  I called my dealer and have it scheduled to take in next week.

UPDATE:  It was a burned flat spot on the belt.  I am pretty sure I know when it happened.  It was my fault riding in high gear in area of trail I should of been in low, got hung up on a spot and I goosed it really hard.  I am sure that is when it happened.  Anyway the factory belt from CF Moto is around 250 dollars not including labor if you have a dealer do it.  I decided to do it my self and took the opportunity to upgrade my primary with 18g weights and 200-1600 spring. (Supposedly it is the same set up that AirDam Clutch kit has).  I also re-clocked my secondary spring to B3.  I did all of this at the same time so hard to say how much difference each one of these things would have individually but I can say with all these items done together what a difference.  Much better response off throttle.

I bought the spring and the weights from CanAM Parts Guy.com

18G weights

Now having said all that, I figured out that I could have just used penny's to add to my stock 16g weights and would have cost me 6 cents.  1 penny weighs 2g.  A penny is almost the exact same diameter as the weights.  Here are some photos.  I don't see any reason why a person couldn't run it with a penny sandwiched in between the stock 16g weight and the weight retainer.

This photo shows an 18g weight next to the stock 16g weight on top of a penny. The other photo shows the penny installed with the 16g weight in the weight retainer.

What belt did you end up going with or did you buy the CF from the dealer?

I've encountered this problem before. When the belt is changed, that knocking sound disappears and you can move around 2000 RPM without jerking.
