Idle surging
« on: May 16, 2021, 10:51:21 PM »
2021 950 sport. Upon start up during riding while warm, idle will be normal 1250-1500. Suddenly surge to 3500 for about 5 seconds and settle down. This is right after start up, but not a cold start. Engine already at running temp and been running fine. So normal, surge, normal. No rough idle or puttering, starts normal, random surge (where you can’t engage a gear due to the revs too high), then back to normal. Doesn’t do this on cold starts.

Few things I have noticed with it: battery voltage will show in the 13s or 12s, and in the time it takes to rev it will get back to the normal 14.2 it’s always at, then stop revving. Maybe unrelated who knows.
Already had the recall done for the throttle previous to purchasing from dealer. Throttle pedal is not stuck when it does it, it’s all the way up and not being pressed at all.

Any ideas what would cause the random surge?

There is a recall on throttle control module and they have had some issues with the idle air control valve....so take it in.

Interesting observations.

It sounds like the ECU is commanding the engine to rev up, so I doubt the IAC is involved. Is this a response to regulator low output? Sounds like a real possibility.

At any rate, if dependably reproducible, taking it to the dealers service department seems appropriate given the thing is brand new. They should have the equipment for monitoring the ECU and identifying the trigger for the behavior.

May be like said above still at idle the charging system isnt active so it might rev up to wake it up and charge up system. Kind of like diesel going to a high idle when their cold. Does it do it when the voltage is above the 14 volts or just when low?

Your valves may need to be adjusted.
