950 air filter placement and...
« on: December 08, 2020, 10:29:47 AM »
I currently have a Z8, but plan on special ordering a 950 next spring.  As many of you know the air filter on pre-950's is located in a hard to change location.  Truely a PITA and that is why many of us have snorkeled.  I've seen the filter size difference between the 950 and the others and like it, but how is the new filter location and design working out?  Do you have to change or clean the filter in the middle of a dusty ride?  Are the intakes on the 950 in a good position where they are out of the dust line?  How much time and how hard is it to change the filter on the 950?  Thanks.

The location of the air filter makes it incredibly easy to access.  It is squarely in the middle rear of the machine, in the forward section of the cargo bay. It is very easy to access and service. One removes a plastic housing cover and three clamps.  The filter is immediately accessible.  It might take a whopping 20 seconds to remove the air filter from start to finish.  I ride in the dusty desert of southern Utah.  I pull the filter and tap it clean before each ride.  It does pick up some dust so I suspect that a snorkel or port relocation might help that issue.  But honestly, where I ride, the dust is everywhere, so it wouldn't be worth the effort for me. It's super easy to tap it clean and change if necessary.  I have over 1000 miles on my machine and I have not had an ounce of trouble with it.

Like the other member said,  the 950 filter is easy to access and the airbox placement is great compared to my zforce 800.  The filter is a Donaldson style and seems to filter well and specs are
Opening ID 3 --3/8"
Opening OD 5 "
Length 9 --13/16..

We have been riding in the southern Arizona desert for almost 2 months now and about 1200 miles. The best thing I can recommend is a S&B particle separator! I can run for a week or two without even worrying about cleaning my stock filter. I find nearly zero dust in the filter even after weeks. I installed a S&B for a Razor with no problems. If anyone needs tips on the install just PM me.

I also just re-routed my clutch fresh air inlet because of way too much dust buildup on the pre-filter and in the clutch housing. I had also previously installed a 'bilge' blower to the clutch fresh air line to help move the dust out of the housing. we shall see how the next clutch cleaning looks.

I want to see how look the s&b and the cvt inlet that you modify

I will try and send more pics later but here is a brief overview of the process.
I mounted the separator on the upper rear cross bar of the roll cage, a large notch has to be cut from the roof to accommodate this.
Next remove the 'cone' pre-filter for the engine air, remove the passenger seat and remove the 4 screws holding the larger access panel in place.
Gently pull the panel out of the way best you can for access to the air filter box itself. (there are wires attached for the computer)
Loosen the clamp at the air box that holds the plastic air inlet tube, I believe there is a 10mm bolt securing the tube, remove the bolt and remove the tube (you won't need either pc.).
Purchase a 3" abs 'street' elbow and a 12" long pc. of 3" abs pipe, and a 2"x4" plumbing rubber coupling.
After removing factory inlet duct, install new rubber coupling on air filter box.
Insert the male end of the street elbow into the rubber coupling on the air box, leave clamp loose until after the next step.
A hole will need to be made in the back panel of the sxs to the inside area of the factory air pre-filter that needs to line up with the 3" elbow on the inside. The 12" long abs pipe will need to go thru the hole and into the elbow. NOTE: the hole will end up being egg shaped!!
I started a little small on the hole size which allowed me to make location and shape adjustments to the hole.
You might need to shorten the 3" abs pipe but not too much because the supplied hose is none too long!!!!
I used a screw to hold the pipe into the elbow to allow removal in the future.
Tighten the hose clamp on the air box when the elbow is aligned correctly!!!
The hose that comes with the particle separator will go from the separator to your new 3" pipe.
Re-install the access panel, seat, and air inlet pre-filter.
I wired the blower on the separator to a switch I added to the dash.

Not as bad as it sounds if your handy!

I used part#76-2007 S&B particle separator for the project.

I will buy the S&B particle separator but my biggest problem is I have the test box cargo, so I can't make the hole to pass the duct into the air filter, I will try to figure out how to do it.

I also wants to re-routed my clutch fresh air inlet and the cvt outlet , can you show me photos about it? im afraid because here we have many river and the Zforce have the CVT outlet to low compare to Can Am or Polaris, this is the reason because I want to install the S&B and re routed the CVT's

Just a note about clutch vent re-routing:
This won't help with possible water intrusion, the air outlet on the clutch housing is still a low point of water entry.
My only reason for adding a blower and changing inlet location is removing dust and heat!

Hello,

Can you give to me the part number for the s&b air separator? I want to buy it.

can you post some images of your oulet cvt and inlet pipe? Just to take a idea of what you did.

Yeah, I have the same TSST box (which is awesome btw and should be fitted as standard IMHO) and I'm liking the idea of these particle separators the more I read about them so have the same fitting/routing issue.
