ZForce 500
« on: May 19, 2019, 06:47:45 PM »
My ZForce 500 is now in the shop for the second time. (800 KM)
First time was strain when starting. (tension at a certain point of engine rotation). Adjusted valve clearance.
Appears ok, but something still not normal in my mind. I'm thinking there should be a steady rotation pace until
it catches and runs. But pretty much every time there's an interruption where everything falls apart with
a clang sound and then picks right back up and continues rotating normally until start. (I am not thinking a loose connection.
The pattern is too consistent).

This time it fast idles (even when fully warmed up). Can't shift in gear.
They changed the Throttle Body....not fixed. Now they have the computer on order.

Any comments??

This turned out to be a sheared flywheel key.

I am thinking the high torque at a certain point in starting rotation problem I had when new
caused the shear. The starter would actually stall and finally continue if key held.

This starting problem is still in effect. It has a new sound. I have attached the old and the new files. Anyone care to
have a listen and see what you think. Dealership can't seem to pinpoint the problem.

Idle fast was was caused by flywheel key broken as seen in the Quote

Thanks

That scream is the sign of a failing starter..a starter that either has a winding problem or is deprived of the CCAs (battery power) it needs to spin the load.

What did you think of the first file sound NMK?? Maybe same problem without the squeal??
Hmmmm....so maybe not enough starter pep (right at max compression) is the problem right from new.
They never did replace the starter. They replaced the relay and then adjusted valves.

Thanks a million NMK. You could very well be right.

You da man...(:

Once it starts it sounds OK...does it run OK? If so timing can't be a problem. The hardest thing for any starter to overcome is the compression stroke...and yours is having a real problem with it. The first file is one with that problem. The second still has it but the windings are burning up...at least the brushed are arcing badly. I think it's too late for that starter so it needs to be replaced. Someone also needs to load-test the battery and check all the connections as well. My opinion-the factory starter came with a winding or a brush problem.

Always runs ok. Also, always starts once it passes the high compression point (problem point).
Once the flywheel gets spinning it will continue to rotate.
It only happens say 5% of the time. (randomly happens to be right at the doorstep of max
compression on start initiation).

Anyway NMK....I am sure you are correct.
I'm allllllllllllll excited...ha

Thanks ole buddy

Sadly  :) it was probably a simple as dry armature bearings initially, we would never think that for a brand new domestic brand. Seen it first hand a few weeks ago, pulled the starter apart & the bushings were dry. A little grease, re assembled & installed....perfect.

The squeal might mean it is beyond a little grease.

I am thinking the squeal is not from starter rotation (Bearings) because the flywheel is not turning yet.
Therefore the starter is at a stand still. It almost sounds like an electrical loaded sizzle/squeal.

That's what I tend to get from file 2. The squeal.....then rotation.

I could be wrong.

When the contact point between the copper commutator and the carbon brushes develops a certain arc, like when stalled between two sections of the commutator, the high frequency sound it makes can sound like a squeal...then stop once it moves..which is kinda what I hear. There usually also is a smell that comes right afterwards.  If this is the case, it does mean it is well damaged already..and the cause of the stall or problem is still there..somewhere. Like ctdls says, it could have started as just a dry bearing.

The starter is removed easily, it comes apart just as easy. Myself I would remove it, take it apart & grease it........for no other reason than to check it off the list  :)
