Vehicle Speed Sensor Location
« on: May 28, 2020, 08:48:03 AM »
'17 500 HO, just took it out after getting it back from service and after a couple miles, the speedo and odometer stopped working.  The service I was getting done was unrelated, and for a $50 part, I'm not going through the issues to have the dealer take care of it.

I've searched all over and even downloaded the service manual, but I can't find where the VSS is located.  I popped the little "sight square" behind the passenger seat and it looks like it's on top of the transmission?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

On the Z800s its mounted so that the pickup uses the rotor mounted on the front output shaft next or close to the case. The only other thing close to it as I recall is the gear selector switch but its a little to the left and up on the case.

Not in the same location as it is on the 800s but as I recall, the sensor top does look a little like that. I'll look through my pics and see if I have one somewhere.

That would be the tachometer sensor I do believe. I adjusted my valves and had to remove that sensor to locate the indentation to get the engine TDC.

Alas! I think I've found it!  Picture attached.  However, the replacement part I ordered from Alpha-Sports (7020-150400) is physically different from the original.  I checked the part # on the bag and it matches what I ordered... I can't find any other harness plugs that match that style anywhere on the vehicle, so I'm pretty confident I found the sensor.

Now here's my rant:
Alpha-sports -> 2017 ZForce 500 -> Electrical System -> Speed Sensor #38 (7020-150400)
Alpha-Sports -> 2017 ZForce 500 -> Left Crankcase Assy -> Speed Sensor #3 (0GR0-011020)

Why is this so confusing?!  #38 doesn't match up (harness plug) to the tach sensor (First image I posted) so WTF is this part for?

I am totally perplexed (and annoyed) at this situation so any insight as to my shortcomings?

Well, this is what I know...and it comes from my 800. There are two speed sensors on the engine. One goes into the block and points to some fins..or rotor on the crankshaft. We call the a CPS but they call it a speed sensor I believe. It supplies a pulse to the ECM for ignition and injector control as well as send a signal to the tach. The other is for the speedometer and is mounted...at least on the 800s..so that it is pointed at the fins or rotor that is mounted on the front output shaft's yoke which only turns when the vehicle is moving.I've looks high and low for some pics and this is the only one I can find. It shows the sensor and its mount but the driveline and yoke is removed because the guy needs to replace the seal.

I think in your first pic that's the gear selector switch. If it's anything like the 800, the speed sensor you are looking would be down by the yoke..I circled it in this pic:
