ughhhh. okay...
Thank you for all the help!
all you do here is much appreciated. I also found a clean service manual for the 500/550 in all my digging/searching for parts and such. If you're interested, PM me.

Dealer told me they have never encountered such a problem and can't find anything about the issue.. so guess I'm SOL there.
going to get a new sprocket and see if the timing chain sits better. If it doesn't, going to pull the engine so I can do the chain as well.

Got my head back. All cleaned and new valves, got a new timing sprocket as well, my question is do you think this spacing in the chain and sprocket is acceptable or do I need a chain as well?

Not looking forward to pulling the block 😓

Looks like the pics I see of incorrect chains to sprockets...IMO you need the correct chain.

That was my fear. This new sprocket looks a lot better, but doesn’t sit in the chain correctly as you mentioned it should.

Lovely.

Has this chain problem been corrected? Is there something special I need to pay attention to when ordering the chain? I’d had to pull it all apart just to end up with the same mismatched chain.

Thanks.

There should be no more incorrect chains on the market as of 2018 so you should be able to just buy the the right chain. If that is a new chain...I stand corrected or it's old stock. If you can find a date of manufacture on the package and it's well after 2018, should be OK.

Thanks for that info. No this is not a new chain. Just a new timing sprocket. Didn’t get the chain yet as they didn’t have it in stock and I was hoping I didn’t need to change it.

Do you have a photo of what the chain and sprocket are supposed to look like when they are sitting perfectly together?

Thanks.

I don't but the chain will ride all the way to the bottom of the sprocket teeth so you shouldn't see any gap between the two.

Thanks for the help. Out comes the engine.
My only concern going in to this is the primary sheave. should is come right off when unbolted? is a tool required like on a snowmobile?
I've never had a clutch separate like this CF one in to two sheaves, so whats the easiest way to remove that fixed sheave? thanks.

All the non-wet clutch versions need a puller to get the inner sheave and spindle to separate from the crank shaft. A service manual would have had that info. Every owner should have one. This is that puller and you can find it a little cheaper in other places:

Thank you! I have a service manual, I didn't see it mention a chapter for the clutch removal but ill look again. Thanks for the link
