Had a nasty one last week, customer put the 550EX in a ditch. We inspected it when it came back and apart from having opened up the axle CV joint andlost all the balls the steering arm was snapped off of the upright, as usual a replacement was not to hand so it was weld  time, again.
What I did notice was that the break was crystalline not sheared or peeled off as would be expected if it had been sheared by force so it looks like the arm broke off due to a crap casting putting the vehicle in the ditch, not the other way around. So another thing to check is cracks around the point the arm meets the upright.

Now there's a safety issue. Not really sure how to check for that.
