Accessory lighting - wiring questions
« on: September 02, 2021, 11:25:27 PM »
I recently purchased a light bar kit that came with a wiring harness that powers on 2 smaller LED lights (mounted on the back) and a small LED light bar on the front. All from one single switch. I do not like the idea of one switch powering all at once so also purchased a 3 switch gang switch (3rd switch for future rock lights).
The question is this: how do I modify the wiring harness so that it goes to the gang switch instead of one switch. I think I can install the gang switch to the dash and tap into a keyed source for the switch but also want to use the relay from the harness and am unsure how to do this. So power goes from keyed  source to the relay and then from relay to the switch?
Oh, and anyone have the wiring diagram for the 2021 ZForce 500 Trail??

Just a question or two-was it supposed to power all or nothing or did it have a front and rear position on the switch? And does it have only one relay?

Let's say it had only one position and one relay. Battery power for the load will come from either the battery or a keyed source. It will branch to the switch to provide power to the relay's coil which when activated closes the contacts between the line and load side of the relay making everything connected to the load side have power. Those switches that provide power to the relay coils are not rated for much more then what it takes to energize the coil which is in the milliamp range (less then one amp) so you can't use it to provide line power for the lights. Better to scrap that harness and build your own using two relays. I can help draw it up if you need but it's pretty simple. My front and rear LEDs were less then 5-amps so I was able to do it without relays and just one-3 position rocker switch I had custom made to say Front and Rear. Only one is on at a time but I suppose you might want both on at the same time at times so you will need two switches.

Sorry NMKawierider, I was buried in google research and actually forgot I had posted to the forum (damn newbies lol).

Yes, it only had one relay and the switch was an all or nothing. Actually finished wiring it up last night and will post pics soon. I ended up getting a second relay, one for the front bar and one for the rear lights. I did install the gang switch on the dash and tapped into a keyed source for that. Then power from the battery to both relays. everything grounded properly and works great! :)

I tried to post pics last night but it seemed to freeze my computer and never posted anything... I must be doing something wrong  :-\

Nice work.. I don't see a fuse on your line power. Always always...otherwise you are asking for a fire. Just put one at the battery connection will cover it all.

Yea, it never made the diagram but there is a fused line to the battery. Thanks.  :)
