I bought a 2016 zforce 500 recently from a friend. He told me there were a few issues, I was able to solve most save for one. I'm hearing a crackling sound in my front left tire anytime the machine is in 4we or 4wheel lock. Mostly when turning but sometimes going straight too. Almost reminds me of cv issues but I'm wondering 1) can I replace just the cv joint or is it a sealed axle 2) what do you suppose it might be?

Only so many things it can be. But it's likely it's the outer CV joint. No one bothers to repair them anymore as it just doesn't pay in the long run. Just replace the axle complete. But first see if it has any movement with the wheels straight and..NOT jacked-up. It could also be a wheel bearing but that takes a little more to check. By the sound of it you may want to have the work done. Takes some tools some just don't have.
