My 2021 cforce 600 touring was making a tapping sound so I figured it was the CVT, however that was not the case as the sound continued when the CVT primary & secondary were removed (attached picture & sound).
I checked the valve clearances and they are a bit high but I don't think that would make the sound.
I tried rotating the primary to see if the bike would go through a full cycle and it seems to stick about when the exhaust valves are opening (attached video).  Should the engine not rotate through a full cycle when turning the CVT primary?

The sound clip says its top end..Cam/Tappets/Chain related. There have been cases where the case broke where the rockers pivot. The video...however shows something very wrong with the cam/sprocket and I can't put my finger on it but it looks like it's jumping time...and it shouldn't.

So suggestions?

I'm trying to fix it myself for a couple reasons, 1) the dealer screwed up the last time I used them and 2) I'm a pensioner so I have more time but less money 😁.

I think a full inspection is warranted and that will require a service manual for as many specs as possible. I would like to watch you rotate the crank two full revolutions smoothly on camera while focused on the top end ...a little closer. Got to ask, does it still start and run? Because damned if it doesn't look like its jumping time on the lower sprocket.

It did run, hence the audio file.
I do own a service manual.
I'll put together & post a video, stay tuned.

Looks like the chain tensioner is done, see attached.
The piston doesn't spring out at all.  Thats a replacement, there's no rebuild for the tensioner, correct?
Also, since I have rotated the engine slightly and the chain slipped, as you saw in the previous video, do I need to align the TDC or anything?  If so, how is that done?  Page 5-99 in the service manual says to check the TDC again but I think that's with the engine on a bench.
It says to "adjust push-pull arm (of the tensioner) to the appropriate length", what would that be?

Man its whatever it says in the manual. And if the valve timing has slipped/jumped, it will have to be re-set.

Sorry to keep asking questions,  but how do you reset the timing ?

You must have the service manual for your machine but its a matter of lining-up a mark on the crank with one on the case and one on the cam gear with the head, then bolting the cam gear back onto the properly positioned cam. Remembering the slack on the chain has to be on the tensioner side. For the detail you must have that service manual. I don't have one for the newer 600s.

I haven't taken anything apart, so should I not be OK?
I do have the 2021 service manual.

Then check the valve timing as outlined in the manual and if OK, continue forward. I don't have the manual so I have no reference to go with.
