Overheating CVT belt
« on: September 30, 2025, 09:07:36 AM »
What might cause the CVT belt to heat up a lot?

I'm see temps of over 250F via the Razorback CVT temp sensor, which is very bad.

Dealer installed a Warrior snorkel kit on my 2020 Cforce 600 touring years ago but I also have a Razorback CVT fan and I can feel a lot of air coming out the CVT exhaust port.

Thanks, John

Might it be the transmission overheating somehow?

There are a number of things that causes the belts to heat...or heat higher then normal. Normal being something at or under 200F let's say. Lower air flow is one, higher continuous higher speeds like running down roads at or above 45mph, higher spring resistance as in clocked to a higher setting or stouter springs in the primary, warn or binding helix in secondary, on some a mis-alignment between the two clutches, a glazed belt slipping all the time. But no transmission issue other then something that would cause increased load on the clutches would have an effect on cooling. The biggest cause on mine even with the increased clocking and other things is air flow. I run an air filter on mine and as it gets more restrictive the flow rate drops and up goes the temps. When it starts bumping upper 190s-200 I flip the helper fan on which takes it back down to the upper 170s. When that stops helping I have no choice but to pull and clean the filter. PITA but at least my clutches stopped wearing out parts from all abrasives being pumped through it. I suggest a full inspection for yours. Check the sheave condition for slippage...which is the #2 cause for unwarranted heating.

How would one know if the helix was binding & what does a worn one look like?
What should the sheave look like?
I have taken apart the primary when a belt blew up and melted, and I think I clocked it to the default Letter, do you know how what the  clocking should be as I will check that?
By clutch misalignment you mean primary to secondary front of the bike to back of the bike?  Ive never checked that, but will.
Thanks John

Well on the helix, if t tends to stop shifting out and tends to run the RPMs higher then it should or, the helix ramp pads are scared and warn, replace them. Stock most all CFMs come clocked to B1. In most normal applications B2 is the highest you ever want and on a 600 that may be too high. C1 is a good spot for any 5 or 600 machine. And if yours is newer then 2017 it likely has alignment shims so that the front and rear fixed parts of the sheaves are in align. As for sheave condition lay a straight edge all the way down and if you see anything like this..even a little bit, it's shot and needs replaced as well as the belt.

I haven't checked the primary/secondary alignment yet but I'm looking through the service manual and don't see any shims for the shelves, am I missing something?
As a reminder, my bike is a 2021 Cforce 600 Touring

Although not where I thought it would have been, the parts breakdown does show one on the secondary.
