Heated grips install
« on: February 11, 2021, 05:37:46 PM »
So I ordered some heated grips.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tusk-Atv-Lock-On-Heated-Grips-Quad-Polaris-Honda-Kawasaki-Can-Am-Suzuki-/173909808268?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292

I was wondering. If there is a accessory wire under the hood? I found a few loose end wires don't seem to be for accessories. But non of them are key activited.

I was wondering if I could put in a add a 15 amp fuse tap to my screen fuse and run of off of there? Or should I go to the battery? I did try to run the wire to the plugs in the fender well for the usb and charger however it's too tight without taking everything apart.

Normally I would say use the acc plug but it's only a 10 amp. For 15 you will need to run to the battery but...you could use a relay triggered by that keyed acc circuit. That way its off when the key is. Simple install and most relays are good for 20 amps.

Would doing a fuse tap for the fuse for the screen work. Just do the fuse tap for 20 amps. Like I said it's tight under there and I got small hands lol.

Nope. You don't have 15 extra amps on that lighting system. You will toast it. In fact you can't get 15 extra amps from anywhere in the system. Now that little relay coil will only pull about .027ma so it's no issue. The load side will be straight off the battery.

So better go straight off the battery then with a relay? New to wiring stuff like this.

Let me see if I can explain this. You will come from the positive side of the battery to the line side of the relay. Then to the positive side of the grips from the load side of the relay. The coil positive post of the relay will be tied to the acc keyed power line. The ground side of the relay coil will go to the frame...or any ground as will the ground side of the grips. Simple. That's the only way you are going to tap 15 amps. Here's what that looks like.

That looks great thank you! Now I have to find a key powered wire now.

The accessory or USB plug should be keyed.

The accessory or USB plug should be keyed.

That's what I'm thinking just going to have to get down and dirty and undo the fenders to find the wires. The kit I ordered shoukd be here tomorrow.

Update:

Just installed the tusk locking heated grips. It took about an hour and a half. Everything is so tight under the hood but I was able to make it work. So far so good.

The 12V accessory "cigarette lighter" port uses the 15A "Smoking" fuse, that you could tap off of.
