Fuel pump not priming/no start
« on: January 23, 2023, 12:50:09 PM »
Hi all, hoping for some help.  Initially I was having some trouble starting my 2022 600T but I would hear the fuel pump prime.  After a few tries the fuel pump would no longer prime and still no start.  I’ve checked the fuses and relays and all seem fine.  Not sure how to test for voltage at the fuel pump connector but perhaps someone can help me with that?  There’s a red and a blue wire coming to the fuel pump.

I would think the red is hot or 12 volt where the other is a ground. Start there and work yourself back. Probably a bad AUX relay or even the kill switch. If you have power there then test the pressure.

If it is primed up to operating pressure, it won't energize until the starter is engaged. Perhaps multiple attempts have achieved this condition. I would put a pressure gauge on it.  If it spins but doesn't start then the EFI is likely not getting energized. Any spark? Injector pulses?  A faulty kill switch is one possibility here - flip it on and off a few times and try again.

2022?  Bring it in under warranty.

Thanks for the replies!  I have spark and have played with the kill switch a number of times.  Kill switch won’t allow engine to crank but when off engine cranks no problem but won’t catch.  So I think it’s not a kill switch issue.  Also, dash lights up fine and no error codes are being shown.  I still think it might be a fuel delivery issue and maybe a power supply problem to the fuse block.  What’s the proper way to test for power into the fuse block?  If I put my multimeter probe in the fuse holder and black to ground should I see 12v?

Yes, but check for power at the pump first..then work back.

So, no power at the connection to the fuel pump.  And there is power to the fuse. Sorry I’m not overly experienced at atv wiring but I assume then that the fused power goes to the ignition switch and my problem must be at either that switch or somewhere between it and the fuel pump connector?  It’s a pretty ugly wire harness.  Would it be more likely the problem is at the switch than inside the wire harness?  Is my next step to look at the  ignition switch or am I off track?
All other ignition switched items seem to be working btw.  Seems to be several relays involved for efi when I look at diagram in service manual.  So guess I need to test those for continuity?  I swapped some of the interchangeable ones with no effect but maybe there’s a problem in the larger ones?

What would be great is to look at a wiring diagram and follow it back. Many times sections of the fuse block is powered by the ignition switch and dispersed from there to other things like relays.. such as the AUX and interlocks. CFM kinda does all theirs in a similar way so I'll take a look at one and see if I can color-trace one for you.

Thanks, I just had modified my question then saw your response lol .  The wires to the fuel pump connector were green and what looked like an orange with black stripe wire.

After reviewing a wiring diagram for the 500/550s, it looks like it would be easier to give you the manual and let you trace them out yourself. Looks like there is a fuel pump relay and the fuse block and kill switch is involved so..here you go. Link expires in 48 hours so download it soon. It's on the last page:

Oh..so you have a manual already. Good.

The diagram indicates that the ECU triggers the starter circuit when all other safeties are closed.

If the ECU has engaged the starter circuit, and you have spark (EFI energized), then I would have to assume that the ECU has also energized the the pump circuit,  so I'm wondering if there is a broken wire someplace or the ECU is faulty.

Do you have the fuel pump wiring diagram handy?

Again thx for the replies!  I am attaching the fuel pump electrical diagram.  It does seem to suggest a problem with the ECU could be my issue.  I tested the fuel pump relay and it’s working and there is power going to it at the fuse block.  Based on the drawing could I somehow bypass the ecu switch to see if pump runs and confirm no wire issue between relay and pump?

If you know the relay works, the safest way is to do a continuity check of the pump wire from the relay to the pump connector.

I would disconnect the fuel line before I put power directly to the pump.
