Fan troubleshooting
« on: June 12, 2023, 05:29:20 PM »
The fan on my Cforce 600 isn't turning on.  Fuse is fine.
I swapped the fuel relay, and the bike is getting fuel, so the relay is fine.
If I pull out the relay and short the normally-open switch the fan should start, correct?   Although I don't see 12V on the relay switch pins, which seems strange.
Is there an electrical diagram for a 2020 Cforce 600 touring rad fan anywhere?

Unlike the 800, the 600 doesn't use a thermoswitch to control the fan. The fan's relay coil is triggered by the ECU...and the ECU uses one of two sensor sections in the temp sensor. One of those two is for the gauge in the dash alone, the other sends it's data to the ECU. Usually if the ECU doesn't get data from any sensor, it flashes the MIL or EFI light. As you didn't mention any flashing lights, we can assume... the problem is either after the ECU or a power supply problem to the fan relay....and sense swapping the relays had no effect we can rule-out a bad relay...I guess. I say re-check those fuses and all connections from the fan back to the relay. You might also pull the ECU and check all its connection pins for any discoloring or oddities and for any dielectric grease that might have gotten in the connection.

The fuse is fine, I checked it multiple times even with a meter, and replaced it too.

So the temp sense module has 2 sensors, is that what you are saying?  It would appear that the ECU is getting the temp as it is showing that it is hot on the display, so it should be turning on the fan.

Is there a wiring diagram for the fan circuit?  I would expect 12V on the switch relay, but I find nothing.   Even if the relay switch is a low side switch I should see 12V from the fan motor on one of the pins, no?

You are correct about the display, when hot it turns on engine-hot icon and then when it gets hotter it flashes that icon and the temp gauge.

I don't have a wiring diagram for your machine. The dealer might be able to get one for you. If it does have a two-part sensor, the gauge part only drives the gauge. The other part supplied data for the ECU and it will cause the flashing and hot light to come on as well as positive trigger the coil in the fan relay. The relay should have 12 volts on the line post when the key is on, 12 volts on the positive side of the coil when triggered, a ground for the coil..obviously..and a load lead which when closed will send that "line" 12 volts to the fan motor. The fan motor will be grounded somewhere else. Below is a layout for the common 20 amp relay for a positive trigger. The posts are numbered. If the CFM relay also had these numbers, it's likely it wired the same way.

Took it in to the shop and it was the fan itself.

Mechanic said that water temp sensor went also, must have been when it was in the shop because it was working before I dropped it off.

Fan replacement is apparently a lot of work as you have to take apart a lot of the front end.
