Stuck
« on: April 11, 2022, 12:01:01 AM »
Had surgery and had not ride this year.  Finally was able to go out today and it was awesome...got stuck in the mud and everything.
Fitted some cheap remote controls for the front and the rear mounted winch and they are not reliable at all.  Any of you guys have issues with remote control winches?

My remote winch works well so far.  The biggest problem is the part on the ATV draws current all the time and it has to be on a maintainer whenever it is stored.  I think the remote on/off only saves the battery on the fob, otherwise, how would the control box ever know the fob is on?
I don't think radio waves penetrate water easily.  The control box might need to be mounted high enough to stay dry when it's needed.
You didn't go into detail about the problems you had with the winches.  Mine has a little bit of a delayed reaction compared to the instant on/off/reverse of hard wired controls.  It can get confusing if the cable is loose enough to snag on the drum and try to wind up the wrong way instead of letting out slack.

may or may not retire soon, almost eligible

On my Z I mounted the remote box as high under the dash as possible and powered it off the acc power which is keyed power so it doesn't use power when the key is off. The FOB or hand remote also has an ON/OFF switch that helps it's battery last. Mine also like most others has a 1-second delay..starting and stopping.. and getting the cable right was an issue so I installed a rubber cable stop(not the hard plastic or aluminum) that gives me a little extra leeway when snugging it up.

Yes, I did just have issues with a cheap remote.
(I'm trying to one Main Street has next, it is on the way)
The Amazon one I ordered . . nope.
nada.
Picked the highest reviewed one and it was a complete dissapointment.
First one didnt work at all, the second one worked enough I tried wiring it in but it absolutely did not work at all.
this was after searching for wire up methods.

The one I tried was sluggish if it worked and it triggers, but I don't think it is is actually closing internally enough to make the connection to trigger the winch solenoid.

I was able to trigger the solenoid by jumping across the connections and with the handlebar switch the entire time.
The receiver unit clicked everytime but would only occasionally fire the winch up.

I have yet to take mine swimming, but I have gotten stuck on several hillsides and having a wireless remote would have made the task eaiser.

So I am going to try the All Balls setup main street cycle sells.

Reaching over the front of my 800XC while trying to guide the winch rope is at the very limit of my 72 inch arm span.

Excellent stuck by the way. My last stuck was on a 70 foot gravel hill I sank to the running boards in. it was about a 50-55 degree (from horizontal) hill so I was a bit pre-occupied.

I got out for a good ride today and ended up having to pull myself out of deep slushy snow.
I used the all balls kit I got via MSC and the remote worked perfectly.
no lag at all.

I'll remember that if I ever need to replace mine. It..like most others have a 1-second delay starting and stopping.

Thanks Skygazer I never considered the constant power draw...wonder if that is why I am now having to replace the battery prematurely.  I mounted the cheap amazon receiver to the original OEM winch that is wired straight to the battery.  It is surprising to see that there is not an inline fuse in between the battery and the winch.  My problems are that the remote control works sporadically, sometimes it stops working in the middle of the operation and other times I have a hard time getting any reaction from the winch and have to press the button on the controller a couple of times even with brand new batteries on the remote. There is a slight delay but that is something I can easily work with and just like you NMKawierider I do have soft rubber stoppers so no problems there.  I install the receiver such a long time ago and I never consider to put it on an acc power; I now have to do some research and relocation to get that done properly.    Is your All Balls setup still working now Ulfthednar?

Just a side note, if the controller has power all the time, it's receiver will be on all the time using power..tripling if not more the parasitic draw and...when the battery sits with below 12.2 volts, it starts sulfating quicker and thus reducing the battery life. Always keep it on a smart charger or tender when not in use..even for a few days. It will help with battery life.
I put my remote controller on the same line as the accessory plug so it was on a keyed and fused power source. The controller has a little antenna that has to be away from other electrical interference sources to work properly. Taping it up to the plastics helps I found.

Thank you very much NMKawierider I now have to change the receiver for sure as its is getting power all the time and even with the machine connected to a smart charger (a Noco Genius 1) my atv will not fire-up after 2 months of no use with a one year old battery that cannot crank it any more.
One quick question, what is the accessory plug you got power from?  Did you splice the positive wires to tap into the 12 volt cigarette lighter port?
Is your factory winch wired straight to the battery positive and negative with no inline fuse anywhere?  Mine came that way  :-\
