The GoPro picks up a lot of gear noise through the cage tubing.  During normal riding I cannot hear gear whine.  Also the camera housing dulls the exhaust tone.  I do have an open back for the camera but I was scared to use it due to the threat of rain.

Yeah mine picks up a lot of extra gear/drivetrain noise too even though I use the RAM mounts with the rubber 1" balls when on the cage anywhere. Different when on the helmet though. I also use the open back for mine to get all the sound but...I have installed a piece of water proof prefilter across it so rain and splash won't get in. Here's what it looks like. Just cut to size and used clear electrical grade RTV around the outside edged and across the center. Works great. Sometimes it does let a little small dust by though.
