Well..if he indeed did pound on it with a hammer, yes, that will damage the rod bearing. This is true with any engine. There is a hand press that wraps around the piston...like a big "C" clamp.. that can be used if necessary but unless the wrist pin lost lubrication and seized, it shouldn't be necessary. Just pop the clips and push it out with your fingers.
