Uforce 800 rear spring sag?
« on: August 16, 2017, 05:44:21 PM »
Has anyone else had their rear springs sag? I normally carry 100 or so lbs. of gear in a box, and occasional small passengers in a back seat. I have my preload set all the way up, and I notice I only have about 2" (or less) of shock travel left while sitting before it hits the integral bump stop on the shock. Have my springs just given out?

they aren't sprung super heavy, kinda a sacrifice you take for having a decent ride. Even on a brand new machine, they are nearly on the bump stop at 300 lbs in the bed with the spring pre-load turned all the way up.

Here's some pics, according to the tape it still shows about 10.2 inches as per specs of ground clearance, but I can put my body weight (about 210) on the rear and bounce it right off the bumpstops easily. I figured I'd probably need to go to something aftermarket, like stage 1 Elkas configured for my particular weights and riding style.

True, I did the bounce test on a rhino and the Uforce, yamaha was much stiffer, Uforce was much softer.

Man...that isn't much travel. Probably what..3"? What are the travel specs? One would think if the height is factory spec with stock sized tires, then the travel should also be per spec...like 7"s?  But maybe that's full swing. I think I might be tempted to talk to the guys over at High Lifter and see what a set of their HD springs would cost...and see if they have something that would fit. Bet they have something like for a Rhino or Teryx..or Ranger that would work. Get the spring dimensions before you call.

Spec sheet doesn't list travel, but an article said 9" travel, and 11" clearance, but clearance was spec on website at 10.2, so I would say 9" was probably exaggerated as well, probably more like 7-8 on travel. I'm probably getting the full 7-8" wheel movement up and down, just only 3 or 4 down from at rest on the springs. I think I need some longer maybe a little softer ones, maybe with an inch or two of lift added in for good measure if the shocks are long enough. I'll check high lifter, a set of 4 stage 1 Elka's dialed in for whatever weights you spec are around $950.00 or so, just changing out the springs would be much cheaper I'll bet.

I will add this comment, not related to sag. Back in May I spent a weekend riding various CFMOTO products, the 800 UF being one of them. Ugly logging roads, lots of rain previously so rocks & washboard conditions.

Really like the UF, seats, extra cab room & layout. No load, passenger only....ride quality did not cut it. I called Elka the following week & had a Stage 1 package on the way. Unfortunately our back country is closed due to extreme fire hazard so I've not been able re visit the same roads.

We do have a very rough field that I've bounced around on, then of course the bounce test stationary. Day & night difference in these conditions.

Elka will set up spring rate however you wish, I've mine set up so If I need heavy load I would remove the rear springs & take out the small spring. As you mentioned you could do the stage 4 or 5. I chose not to as the price goes up dramatically, more just an experiment to see if they worked as described.
ZF 800 LX Trail, stock for now.......not for long.

Your ground clearance is what it's supposed to be how is the ride, are you pounding on the stops under normal riding conditions? You state that you have 100lbs of gear in the bed does that include the cargo box, rear seat, and cage, how small are the 2 occasional passengers 50lbs, 80lbs each, you might have more weight in the back than you think. I am not familiar with the Uforce but looking at the picture I am guessing the total travel for your shocks is maybe 5", you can find out easy enough by disconnecting one end of the shock and measure the length of the shaft and then subtract the length of your bump stop, the difference is your available travel, what I did notice is that your bump stop looks to be very long compared to any that I have seen, from the picture I am guessing  it is about 3" long and unless it is super soft it is taking up a large percentage of your total travel. If you are content with the height and the ride I would suggest cutting down your bump stops and see if that helps, if not you can always purchase the Elkas or replace the springs. I have the opposite problem with mine, it rides like a truck in the back, I jump in the bed (230lbs) and it drops 1/4", waiting for softer springs to be delivered next week.

Ride has softened considerably since new, around 600 miles on it now. The stops are pretty soft, but shortening them a bit did enter enter mind. I'm thinking I'll try some longer springs of similar stiffness might gain an inch or two and not ruin the ride. The fronts seem to have held up better, but 600 miles shouldn't wear them out I wouldn't think. 90% of my miles has been just with around 100# in the back. Maybe just weak steel in these springs. Where did you get your springs from?

I agree 600 miles should not have worn them out, are you out of warranty? There was someone on here about a month ago trying to sell Super ATV 2" spacers which is basically the same as adding 2" of preload, they should give you some additional ground clearance as well as a stiffer ride without using all of your preload, I can't remember what he wanted for them, of course, your other option is to replace the springs as NMK said, I think you can probably get a set for under $150. I found a pair on eBay, they are progressive springs that were ordered wrong and never used, they are exactly the same dimensions as my factory springs only with fewer coils, they may be too soft but for $45 I thought I'd give them a try.
