Over Heating
« on: April 07, 2021, 07:51:39 AM »
My 2020 is having some issues with over heating. The fan kicks in at 3 bars, but moves to 4 pretty consistently on cool days. I had it out this past weekend and it hit 5 bars on a 70 degree day and jumped to 6 before quickly going back to 5. I verified coolant levels and they look fine. It's still under warranty should I take it in? Something easy to check?

How many miles?

Is this a change in behavior?

Any time a CFM goes past 4 bars you should be concerned. If the fan is running and the temp increases, its likely that the coolant or air flow rate is reduced for some reason. Check that the radiator and/or the oil cooler is clear and free of any mud or other restriction. If clear, need to get an actual temp reading on the radiator. Just use a temp gun. If at or below 190 near the center, then look to a stuck thermostat or water pump issue...something that causes a slowing or restricted coolant flow.

I'm about 1150 miles. Most of which was during the winter (less than 40 degrees), this was the first time really riding it hard in warmer weather.

Clark has offered sound advice.

The good news is that the fan is working. Does it overheat if left idling?

Can I assume since its mostly cold weather riding, that it hasn't been driven through muddy water or mud? If it has been, then the first thing to do is clean the radiator fins out and restest.

You might also open up the burp screws until coolant starts running out, just in case it came from the factory with air in the system.

Also check flow rate by warming up the machine with the radiator cap off. You should be able to see the coolant start to "flow" after the engine gets up to temp.

It has seen a little bit of mud but washed since. I verified that coolant is flowing with the radiator cap off I can see it. With the cap off coolan did overflow out of the top leading me to think I might have an air pocket. Can you tell me where the burp screw is? I cant seem to find it. With the machine running idle in garage it took about 20 minutes to hit 3 bars and fan kicked on pushing back to 2 very quickly. It's been repeating this cyle for about 30 minutes.

The V-twins have the bleeds on top of the thermostat housing. There is two, one on each cylinder bit one isn't a thermostat housing.

2017 uforce 800 fan not kicking on. I changed fuse relay and radiator has been thoroughly rinsed. What else could it be.

2017s still use the thermo switch. 90% of them go bad. It's the only thing on the radiator that has wires going to it. Unplug it at the connector and jumper the harness side, then turn on the key. If the fan cones on, replace it...and also make sure the coolant is to the very top of the radiator at the cap..no air gap. If the thermoswitch is exposed to air, it won't work either.

Assuming you have checked the fuse and its not blown, jumper the thermoswitch and test for power at the fan motor. If there is 12 volts on the power line, and the ground wire is grounded, replace the fan motor. If no power at the motor, and there is power on the relay's line terminal, replace the fan relay.

I guess I had changed the wrong fuse because I went to troubleshoot again tested everything and turned out good so started from point one again and the fuse was blown, replaced it and it's working.   Thanks so much for your help I appreciate it.

Good. Just keep in mind fuses blow because the load down-stream is higher then it's rating. This can mean the fan motor is pulling more then it should and if so, will go out sometime as well as blow that fuse again.
