oil pressure issue
« on: June 10, 2020, 05:14:53 PM »
I will keep it short. 2020 u800 with less than 300 mi. Has new oil and filter, oil level little higher than half way on dipstick. Oil pressure indicator came on (flickered) at a steady 3000rpm.  Put guage tester on sending unit port. When warm at idle is 20psi, factory minimum is 18.5 (converted from kPa). Spooled up engine to 3500rpm and pressure jumps around randomly between 40ish psi to 50psi. Like its pulling pockets of air into the pickup tube. Thought I saw this on my first outing but thought I was imagining it. Before I take it back to the dealer, is this considered normal? And if not, probable cause?

The pressure is in the normal range and the pressure warning switch shouldn't come on until under 10psi so..you do have a bad switch...and you aren't the first. As for the jumping..as a mechanic I would say that's not normal and would indicate a problem with oil pump intake side, an issue with the pressure relief valve..of which there have been some, or something changing the flow on the discharge side..of which one guy found manufacturing debris..such as aluminum disks in his oil cooler blocking it.

I suggest filling the oil to the top marks on the stick NOT screwed in and see if that makes any difference. If the pulsing stops, there is something about the intake that's just not 100%. May be pulling air from somewhere like you said.

Just for the record, I talked to the dealership tech the other day and he stated that inverted pressure drops like I described are normal. I don't think so.

Me either. I would like to hear his explanation though. Would prove entertaining.

Said something about the oil pump being a direct drive. I've worked on engine all my adult life. Never heard that one before.

Me either. The only times I ever saw fluctuations was when the pump was cavitating because of some blockage or starving because the pickup was packed with BS or..the tube was falling off pulling in air. Even a warn pump stays pretty steady...low but steady. Now with that said CFM has had some issues with their relief valves binding or getting stuck..and some have had failed springs...so maybe...

Gawd!I hope not. It's probably buried and would be like pulling a tooth to get at.

At least the pressure is in the normal range...unlike others that had it below 10psi no matter what. Page 10-8 of the service manual..for the Z8s has the valve. It's under the CVT inner cover.

It doesn't look like I will have to pull body panels off to get at it. Thank you for all your help. I've been video journaling this whole thing and will be posting it on YouTube when done.
