Uforce 500 grinding noise on brand new machine
« on: April 16, 2018, 06:30:02 AM »
Ok, so I bought a brand new Uforce 500 HO and now have 12 miles on it.  Was following break in procedures and taking it slow.  On level ground, stopped shifted from H to L, waited about 2-3 seconds, then slowly applied gas.  Started to move forward and then grinding noise.  UTV moves but serious grinding noise.  Taking to dealer today, but was curious if anyone has any idea.

Only in Low? Low range will make a different sound..but normally it would be classified as a "grinding" sound.

If it did not go into Low Range fully it will make a horrible sound. Not a problem, just make sure that it goes into low range correctly. Watch the display & firmly shift it.

Yeah...there had been a lot of shifter linkages that needed adjustments.

Doesn't sound like it's in gear..or grinding gears. Hold the button down to release the shifter's detente and see if you can go a little farther.

Mine does that too on occasion and the work around is to shift to high or low like you mean it with a swift sweep of the selector. Do not be gentle and you will find that the issue will seldom reoccur.
Selecting park can also be challenging at times and a simple back and forth motion of my body in the seat allows the Uforce to roll ever so slightly and to click in.

The linkage probably needs adjusting but living with the small annoyance for now until better weather shows up again.

Well took it to the dealer, now remember it has 12 miles on the machine.  I have burned about a 1/4 tank of gas.  Dealer report is rebuild transmission.  SERIOUSLY!!!!!!  He tried adjusting it and could not get it to engage without the grinding.  He contacted manufacturer and they said rebuild, he asked for a new swap of motor/transmission, they said NO.  THIS SUCKS AND ISN'T RIGHT!!!! SHOULD HAVE GONE WITH A MORE REPUTABLE NAME OR NOT BOUGHT ONE.  12 MILES WOW!!!!!! I really should be able to put something in gear, that is designed to be put in gear, without have to manipulate the gear shift for it to work.  They don't tell you when you buy it that, "hey that gear shift has to be jiggled around to work properly".  One and done. :'(

CFMOTO do the right thing.

I hear your frustration, my brothers John Deer Gator RSX850 transmission flew apart at 200 km while out trail riding. Can happen to any machine out there.

its a mechanical gear box, this isn't a car... The driver needs to make sure it is in gear or your dealer needs to make sure it is adjusted properly. Sounds like 1 of the 2 of those things isn't happening.

Problem is..when they are not fully seated..per the transmission's detent,  when you apply power they force themselves apart..and as the shifter mechanism is locked in it's detent, the only option it has is to bend the shifter fork on the drum as it forces itself apart. From then on it will never be able to fully engage. This is the fault of the assembler and the plant...and the dealer going through their checklist for not catching this before it hit the sales floor. Nearly all of them are miss-adjusted to some degree. Many of the older ones, like mine, even had the detents on the shifter not able to match the transmission's. I had to "adjust" my plastic notches  so all of them would. That..is a manufacturer issue.

I am so sorry this happened to the OP..it shouldn't have. There is just no excuse. I urge every CFM owner to check their shifter alignment.

Spaz192 I have problems with the breaks and my warranty ran out in December. The bike is one year old had the breaks bled twice by the dealer. The bike sat in the garage all winter was going for a ride the other day and no breaks and not a bit of fluid on the floor. Contacted the dealer they say it is off warranty only 1200 km on the bike. I sent a email to the head office ( I live in Canada) explain the problem head office contacted the dealer this will be fixed on warranty. Contact the office in the US. No harm in contacted them.

Okay, I understand how to put something in gear.  I can shove this gear shift as far as it can go, it's only going to go forward as far as it will go.  It grinds no matter what I did.  It grind no matter what the dealer did, even adjusting it as far as it would go.  What pisses me off is, I have 12 miles on this machine and total about 2 hours of operating time.  I am 55 years old and not a kid, grew up being a mechanic and work on Jet aircraft by trade now.  I understand how to simply put something in gear.  With such low time/miles having the machine in my possession for only a couple of weeks, I wouldn't expect a manufacturer to tell a dealer to rebuild the transmission instead of providing him a new one to install.  It comes down to customer relations from the manufacture and their reputation as a fly by night machine or wanting to be a cut above everyone else.  Lesson learned again.   >:(

I just posted this:

http://cfmoto-forum.com/800ex800/shifter-mod-3029/

Looking @ the two p/n's I suspect they are the same shift box. In fact my experience with the UFORCE suggests it is the same box. It suffers the same low range grinding as you are describing as does the ZFORCE.
