This is a general question...if the cap for the fuel pump is cracked, will that cause the engine to sputter at higher RPMs? It idles okay. It also uses a LOT of gas.

I have changed the spark plug, tested compression at 145 PSI, cleaned the throttle body twice, gapped the valves, and it still sputters.

If it can cause a loss in fuel pressure, yes, absolutely...especially at higher demands which is at higher RPMs. All it would take is a loss of about 3psi. What is the current pressure and what does the book say it should be?

You measure the fuel pressure at the fuel injector..or anywhere between it and the pump with a fuel pressure gauge. It will be in the 40+psi range. Usually between 43 and 47psi. This may be something for your dealership's service department to do.

Thanks again. I don't have a gauge, and I can't even find the injector, and the service manual doesn't mention anything about all of this! It is about worthless! But this is good information.

Update: I cleaned the throttle body again, and this time I did it meticulously. It runs now! So I guess I missed something the first time. I did clean out the sensor hole, so that might be what it was. The sensor telling the machine to take more gas when it didn't need it. Anyway, it works now. I will keep in mind your suggestions for the future...and get the fuel pressure tested when I can.
