Rattle/clanking on deceleration.
« on: December 05, 2023, 02:39:36 PM »
Hi all,

as the subject states, I've got an increasing rattle/clanking noise on deceleration only. All fluids are good and it accelerates and drives fine. but as soon as I start slowing... the noise immediately starts. I'm guessing bearings or a pinion somewhere along the drive shaft. Does anyone have an exploded view of the drive line (or even better a shop manual pdf)? It took me 20 minutes to find the tranny dipstick lol, so I'm trying not to pull extra stuff apart if its not necessary.

Thanks again for any advise.

Have to ask..does it make a difference if it is in 4WD or not? and if not, there are some other things that can make noises on deceleration like heat shields touching exhaust springs (common), shifter linkage out of adjustment (also common). If it does make a difference, as I look at the breakdown on Alpha-Sports, it does not have u-joints or a carrier  bearing. It has orbital splines on either end..which I have no info on whether they go bad fast or not.  Also a common...well actually not so common problem are the rubber parts of the engine mounts. They go bad or the mounts are loose so check those.

Thank you, that is good info and ill start checking those areas as soon as the snow melts off. No it shifts into all ranges fine (4 low/high and 2wd) with no issues... but the sound is consistent regardless of what range I'm in and always ONLY on deceleration. I think it made the sound since the day I bought it new intermittently if I remember, but now it is much more pronounced. As far as shifting, its been adjusted once at Hester's and it shifts fine, but sometimes I have to "wiggle" in my seat a bit for it to show P in the display. Thanks again for the problem areas... kind of worried about there being no carrier bearing, that's not good !!!

Having to wiggle the shifter to get the park light on means the selector switch isn't making contact when it should...which means either the shifter linkage is mis-aligned or there is a bent fork on the shifter drum. Check the alignment first..obviously. IF..what you hear is the dogs freeing from the receivers on decel because they were not fully engaged, I fear all this has caused rounding-wear on them and may have forced-bent their fork. Fingers crossed it's something else though.
