Snorkeling an 800 trail.
« on: February 14, 2019, 09:02:51 PM »
I think I am going to buy a 2019 800 Trail. I have read all about snorkel on these on the forum. Instead of a canister would it be possible right below a joint on the PVC to drill and install a bold to keep a filter from falling down inside the PVC. I thought about putting a Uni double filter on top of old and then a  sock filter on top of it. I could take the band off and drop both filters out when it’s time to clean and reinstall them and put the band clamp back on. Does anybody think this would work? Has it been tried? Thank you very much. Have my list of upgrades I would like to do already. Just have to buy the CF and find time to do it

Somewhat unclear as to your thoughts but the things to keep in mind are- Snorkels are intended to keep water out of the engine first. That means all connections must be without fail, waterproof and trustworthy through the worst of conditions . That the intake side of the filter is 2.25" so even using 2" will become restrictive at higher RPMs (2.5" is recommended). That in any case, your filtration goal is to stop all particles, no matter the size, from getting to the engine. So your filter(s) must fit properly, be of the best quality, and be serviced properly as needed and with the best oil/treatments.

Think it through well before starting. There are many ways this can be done but only one will be best for you and your needs.

I want to snorkel it the way you have on your videos I’ve watched except I thought I could do away with the canisters and put the filter directly into the 3 inch PVC with a bolt drilled through the center of the pvc to hold the filter from falling down.  I would drill it at the top of the last PVC joint before I put a short piece in where it would run to the snorkel hood. I could take the breeze band off drop the filters out and clean them. I would put two filters in one a dual filter at 3 inch OD and a sock filter  3 1/4 or 3 1/2. Both Uni. I want to make it air tight as possible to protect the motor. I don’t go through very much deep water but I want to the snorkel just in case. Thanks for any info.

Just don't see it. The minimum size filter for an 800 engine is 4" in OD and 5"s long. You will need at least 1/2- 3/4" around the outside of the filter for air flo. Never get that out of a 3" pipe. Might use a 2" filter about 12-14" long but but the ID of the filter would be too small for the engine ..and how would you seal it to the pipe inside? Maybe draw something up and post it so we can see it.

I see what you mean now. I think I’ll just buy the canisters like you did. Retiring May 31 and just trying to save a few bucks but not at the expense of the engine. Definitely want to take care of my new ride. I have two other ATVs that I do regular maintenance on. Thanks for the info and great videos.

The other thing to think about is...any modifications like that will probably void your warranty. So..maybe for now just get the Uni for the airbox and leaver the rest alone for now...at least until the warranty is expired.

Never thought about that. Thanks! Is the oil from the factory ok for the break in? I’m going to run 15 w 40 diesel regularly.

Yeah...but change it at about 50 miles right off and stay with conventional until well broke in...then you can use a synthetic...and always use an oil that is JASO MA2 rated for your wet clutch.

Do you have a part number for the carbon canisters and the Uni filter number?

Yeah but remember that I gutted the one for the engine air and put a 2.5" sleeve in it so I could run that special Unifilter in it...and those cans were 3" basses. There's a video on all that.

This was the cans:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-3-Filter-Box-Title-Carbon-Fiber-Induction-Ram-Cold-Air-Intake-System-/401234990947?hash=item5d6b781763

And this was the Uni I put inside the engine air intake. It's a 4x6 with a 2.5" flange: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Uni-UP-6245ST-2-Stage-Straight-Pod-Filter-63mm-I-D-x-152mm-Length/141684103161?epid=171236706&hash=item20fd07d7f9:g:fkEAAOSwtGlZGeDI:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true

These are the vids on making the adapter and going with the Uni.. although I don't use the Twinair any more and had to shorten the inside part of the pipe to get the Uni as low as possible to get the 1" of space at the top.

I'd switch over to a 5w or 10w after break in. 15w is too thick on cold starts. Rotella T6 works well and is cheap for a synthetic
