The high and low range on the transmission are a separate function from the operation of the front diff and 2/4wd system. A scanning of the owners manual shows no association mechanically and electrically there is an RPM limiter when in diff-loc so...the problem must be that the coupler isn't being moved far enough to engage it properly and slips when in high and not in low. There are three reasons for this that happen with these. The first most common is the plastic slide bar/block has some missing teeth from being actuated when not in a position to complete the cycle. The second is that same situation instead of stripping teeth off as instead bent the attached fork. The third is that the actuator or switch itself has a problem. You can drain the oil and pull the actuator to inspect the drive block and fork. Below is what you will see. This one is OK and has nothing wrong with it. You can also manually slide it to check function but always return it all the way to that side when re-installing the actuator. And be careful of the o-ring...it damages easy.
