With the new z500 at the dealer for some warranty work on the 4WD actuator, I decided to roll the broken z600 into the garage for a teardown and assessment into what parts I'll need to order. I more than expected to see a broken mounting plate for the rear gearbox, but I did NOT expect to see a mounting plate that had also been broken BEFORE. The mounting bracket had two weld lines in mirrored places to the new breaks that were on it. Along with some additional "re-weld" evidence found other places on the frame I'm reasonably certain something serious happened to the machine early in its life that the second owner I bought it from was completely unaware of. (or he actually did it and lied like hell to me) Anyway, the more I dug the more I realized that the majority of the damage was in the two flimsy mounts and an axle that took the brunt of the disconnect event. The main bearing in the gearbox was flexed enough where it makes a little bit of noise when turned so I'll be doing a complete rebuild of that with a mechanic neighbor's assistance. I had never worked with metal in any significant way so I went into this thinking I was going to make some measurements and drawings for the needed pieces and get them to a professional. On a whim I decided to do a bit of research on welders and went out and got everything I'd need to fabricate the brackets myself. 48 hours later and the gearbox is back on the frame for a test fit with the new, functional and much stronger brackets. With the rebuild kit in hand and the new axle on its way I'll be able to use the ol' 600 soon.

Many thanks for the heads up on the filter replacement. I've only ridden it a bit in the yard for some break in so I'll get the new filter on order ASAP. Luckily it has been raining here so the dust has been at a minimum. I'll get into the air box tonight and measure everything for proper fitment.

Second time I'm chiming in on the "new ride" section. The old z600 "bit the dust" for the moment so I decided to "bite the bullet" and just get a brand new one. Local powersports dealer just happened to have a 2022 z500 available for immediate gratification. Now I can have full control and knowledge of what happens and how it's treated. No running this one without an air filter.

ZForce 600EX/600 / The z600 project - on hold for now
June 16, 2022, 09:05:16 PM
I had the cylinder rebuild all done and tested. All electrical was working great and not throwing any errors. Took the the unit for a test run and all seemed fine. Even noticed a difference in the throttle immediately as I no longer had to "floor it" to get it to go 40-45 MPH. I still felt like I had a little left I could push out of it which was the ultimate goal of the cylinder rebuild. Then... I hear a loud vibration... lose power to the rear wheels... finishing with with a clanking noise. Find out the rear prop shaft pulled apart. There are tears in the metal plate the gearbox is mounted on, the axles don't look so hot and I was leaking gear fluid. So, I'm putting that little project SxS on hold for a bit. At some point I'll get it to someone that know more about/has time for a repair involving metalwork and welding.
I did, though, "fix" the problem of a lack of SxS for the wife with a visit to a local powersports dealer where they had a 2022 z500 that is now being broken in by me.

ZForce 600EX/600 / Connecting to ECU with K-Line diagnostic tool
June 10, 2022, 10:42:49 PM
I ordered a K-Line to USB adapter and made an adapter to connect pins 4, 7 and 16 to ground, K-Line and 12v. I have been unsuccessful in getting a connection to the ECU thru HUD ECU hacker. I have an older 2013 z6 and was wondering if anyone has had success in getting a PC connected to one of these machines.

This little Z600 has most certainly been the "project car" I was looking for. When I first got the SxS I discovered that there was no air filter and some of the airbox hardware was missing. I was getting a significant amount of oil in the airbox and intake so I installed a catch can, built some custom parts to get the air filter back and tested the compression. I measured 114 PSI which, at the time, I thought was fine so I rode it a little as is. The oil that was going into the airbox was gone, but the catch can was almost half full after a 15 mile ride. With further study I discovered that the specified cylinder pressure was intended to be more in the 145 PSI range, so a rebuild was in order assuming I have damaged cylinder walls and rings. A little bit of Ebay later, rebuild kit in hand I get going on the project. Discovered early on that the valves had nearly NO clearance (cannot be good) so I made sure those measured properly when I put everything back together. Tested the pressure after reassembly and got 148 PSI. Happy camper am I.
Flushed most of the oil and replaced with what I had left over from my earlier maintenance along with some Lucas break in additive. I'll be doing the ring break in followed by a full oil/filter change in the morning once the gasket compound cures.

Part 2 to the Wife's Z600. Most of it has been complete for some time. She now has a 26" sound bar, a "glovebox" for additional storage, some DIY fender flares made from a single 2'x3' mud flap, a full cabin enclosure from 3 Star Industries, custom snorkel modification to get the venting and breathing of engine parts AWAY from the dusty compartment, an oil catch can with breather filter and protection flap (latter 2 not pictured). I've included a complete pic of hers and one of 'his and hers' side by side (haha).

ZForce 600EX/600 / Re: ECU giving 0134 and 0030 O2 sensor codes
May 23, 2022, 05:48:40 PM
Got the new ECU. Hooked everything back up, started the engine and NO codes given... initially. I took it for a ride and nothing happened. Next day after I put in some gas and turn the key it's giving an error code. This time only the 0134. The 0030, for now, is gone.
[UPDATE] Had a fuse go out due to the control box for the light whips, uh, melting. I installed it just behind the back plastic right in the center and apparently WAY too close to the muffler. But in any case in testing systems after its removal I noticed that no error was being shown. Just to see, I put the old ECU back on and it gave both 0134 and 0030 codes again, so, it would appear as if it is showing false O2 sensor signals. At least the purchase wasn't for naught.

Yeah, the 3 pin config in those schematics is what I tried. The OBD powered right on when I plugged it in but (as I said) it was unable to communicate with the ECU. Many thanks for the response, it had a LOT of useful and specific things about connecting an OBD to different set ups.

I found a schematic for a 16 pin OBD2 to 3 pin diagnostic plug and made a little adapter for my scanner. It powered up but was unable to connect to the ECU even with testing different pin configs. I'll see if my local ATV dealer happens to have a 3 pin diagnostic reader, but in the mean time I'm just going to allow my Ebay order to process for a new one. If my original is by some chance still good then it looks like I'll have a spare.

I have no access to one of their readers. Unless someone knows how to rig a modern OBD2 reader to the CFMoto 3 pin diagnostic plug. Also, from a post back in January 2020 you told another 2013 z600 owner that the codes do not get stored.

If you correct the issue, the light will go out immediately.
It's not like a modern car where the light stays on until the next time the ECU runs and passes the internal tests.

Ok, wired leads 4 and 3 of an O2 sensor directly to the wires on pins 24 and 21 of the ECU plug and that does not stop the 0134 error. Unless there is something to attempt I am not thinking of looks like I'll be ordering an ECU soon.

ZForce 600EX/600 / Re: ECU giving 0134 and 0030 O2 sensor codes

Tested continuity between battery negative to frame and then to engine case. Both pass. Tested 0 resistance in sensor pin 4 to ECU plug pin 24. Showed 3 ohms when going from sensor pin 3 to ECU pin 21. Zero resistance sensor pin 2 to ECU pin 15. When the ECU is connected the battery ground also shows continuity from sensor pin 3 AND sensor pin 1. My understanding is that sensor pin 1 is the power to the sensor's heater, and I'm not so sure that one should be grounded. Grounding to pin 3 disappears when the ECU is disconnected but for pin 1 it does not. I know that's a lot of data but I wanted to be as thorough as possible with my findings.

ZForce 600EX/600 / Re: ECU giving 0134 and 0030 O2 sensor codes

The symptoms do seem to suggest a connection problem, but as I had mentioned I checked continuity from ECU plug to O2 sensor plug and all showed closed circuits. I'm still very willing to perform further troubleshooting even if it means taking the older sensor (or even the new one) and wiring it up at the harness right next to the ECU plug. That way I'll at least be able to eliminate a few feet of wire. I agree that it seems odd that ONLY the O2 sensor functionality is effected. I'll go a step deeper and check the resistance of each of the harness wires too, any significant amount would still show a 'closed' continuous circuit, but certainly effect the readings at the ECU end. (Speculative) Maybe I have a crushed/pinched area of the harness reducing electrical flow to a minimum? Many thanks for your responses.
