Z1000 from Romania
« on: May 18, 2019, 02:44:03 PM »
Hello all,

I purchased a Z1000 in November 2018 and today I've almost done with the custom work I had planned and I think it's time to introduce myself
To shorten the story: custom rollcage and rock sliders, 28x10x14 all around ITP Ultracross tires mounted on Raceline A71 Mamba rims, Uni Air Filter, Two Brothers exhaust, Attitude Industries fuel controller plus the usuals: led bar, mirrors, gopro camera, gps tracker and cargo box (already received and waiting to be mounted).
The only remaining part to be installed is the doors from Nicholas (which I ordered and wait for them).

600 miles so far, 30 with air filter and fuel controller installed. Totally other machine.

The only problem I had was some harsh noises when engaging high gear (not always but in 7 by 10 attempts). As far as the dealer told me, 80% of the Z1000 built in 2018 have this factory problem. Cf Moto acknowledge this issue and it will be covered by warranty.

Other than that I am very pleased with this machine. I upgraded from a Z550 EX and it's a huge difference. My favourites are rocky, mountain trails, snow trails (6 months per year) and some forrest trails.

You mentioned the fuel controller & air filter made a very noticeable difference. I'm curious what you found & why, did the exhaust contribute to the change?

I've heard some issue with machining in the trans, not sure exactly .....things maybe to tight. Poping out low gear is another, have you had that?

First of all, I must tell you that I felt the change, not verified on a dyno bank.
After I installed the air filter, exhaust and fuel controller, the throttle is much more responsive, the torque is also higher.
The exhaust is mandatory because it allows the gases to be evacuated more quickly. Just a sport air filter (and a fuel controller) is not enough.

Poping out also happened in my case but before installing the fuel controller and change the ECU map.
You must change the ECU map because the machine comes from factory with a map that limit the AFR and, when you install the air filter and exhaust, a larger amount of air goes through the engine. This way, it remains unburnt fuel which will ignite into the exhaust and produce what is called poping. At least that was the explanation which I received from the mechanic (I'm not very technical but i'm curious).
Don't know if that's 100% accurate but I can tell you that after changing the ECU map, I have zero poping no matter the gear I'm in or the RPM.

Thanks Cosminium !, I have been doing some research and have settled on the 2 Brothers exhaust and the Attitude Controller with the Uni Air Filter already installed. It's great to hear that the same set up was noticeable. Welcome to the family !

@Buzzard: thanks a lot
@gfmoto: those are the doors safety pipes which I removed because i installed the doors).
@jonesyusa: Doors are from Nikolai Rodin from Russia: http://cfmoto-forum.com/800ex800/russian-doors/15/, the rims are Raceline Mamba A71B beadlock (with ITP Ultracross tires and ITP Blackwater EV for winter), the roll cage and rock sliders are made by me and a friend (100% custom). Other than these, i put: led bar, third brake light, bed storage box, side mirrors, all purchased from ebay. Performance parts are detailed above.
@Mogleybear: thanks

Yes, it's cold but I like it and the machines don't heat at all.
Regarding the roll cage, I think I wasted enough tubes to build another one :) I did it by the proven method: try - chop - try again until it came as I wanted.

Now, with these snow piles, I thought to buy a 2 - 2.5 inch lift kit. Anyone uses a lift kit? Any opinions regarding the stability of the machine? I know a lift kit will impact the stability but how much?
