New Z800 Trail owner with a question
« on: November 24, 2017, 01:44:37 PM »
Hello,

Traded in my Polaris Sportsman 570 atv towards a new Orange z800 trail. This was purchased as a 90% hunting vehicle here in Idaho and 10% summertime play when we go camping. My wife is super excited as she will have her own seat and not have to bounce around on the back of the wheeler.

I was about to pull the trigger on a Polaris 570, but the more power and more features for money sold me on the CF Moto.

Anyways, I bought it Wednesday and the dealer is putting it together with a few add ons on I purchased and I am expecting to pick it up tomorrow - saturday. I will hauling this in the back of my pickup - 2016 Ram 3500 Short Bed Cummins. The dealer says its no problem at all for the machine to fit in with the tailgate down. Im sure it will be fine, but I figured I would ask you all if I will be ok?

The truck as a 4400 # payload so I am not worried there, just want to make sure the length of the bed with the tailgate down will be ok. I plan to purchase 2 2x12's for the tires to run on as well as DG tailgate support bars. Any other suggestions or feedback?

Thanks

With a short bed it's going to be close.. 2' less then my long bed? so..I question if it will actually fit.. but yes, defiantly the support bars. I know on my long bed Dodge the back wheels just touched or sat on the hinged side of the gate. Yours will be 2' back from that at or on the outside edge (hopefully) and with the bulk of the weight being on the back you will want the DG supports. I had them on mine mostly for support while loading. Here's a pic or two.

On my new truck they aren't needed.

This is in another thread. I have a Z force and a shortbox Ram. The Z force with the front tires up against stops as you describe will rest with the back tires right on the edge of the tailgate. Since the tailgate is completely supported by the cables and the machine is nearly 1200 Lbs dry, I wouldn't trust this one bit.
To say nothing of the fact you'll never get your loading ramps out as the tires will sit right on the ramps flanges!

Now I re read it with a bit better comprehension... :) Yes the tailgate bars will be a good idea. I too made 2X12 planks for the tires for back-loading it.

All too close for comfort for me. Might want to consider investing in a trailer.

I agree. I made the plank thing but I only used it once. :)

When I had mine I thought about a set of those car ramps to drive the front up on and get it a few more inches forward but even mine needed six or seven inches to shut the gate so I didn't bother with it.

If a trailer is not an option you might want to look at a riser. It enables you to pull the front end up and put the vehicle in at an angle. It helps with short beds. I'll post a picture of my long bed with one I made. But remember my bed is 2 feet longer.

It is really easy to load. Not as scary as one would think. I have tailgate support bars and TITAN ( 11ft ) ramps. Since the picture I now load it in backwards. I also pull a 34ft trailer with this set up during camping season.
