What on earth is the lock above the steering column for?

Welcome. It's to lock the steering wheel. A bit awkward with the rubber guard on the key though.

Thanks!  It doesn't lock anything on mine. And when you turn the key horizontal, not only doesn't the steering wheel lock, the key doesn't come out of the lock.

Try moving the wheel back and forth a little while turning it. The key should make one full turn if I remember. Finding one of the holes for the pin takes a little. I never use mine cause it's a pain.

Thanks!  That's exactly what was needed. Took about 3/4 left turn. Wouldn't work at all turned to the right.

Just tried mine...took 1/8 turn to the left from straight to find the hole.

It is difficult and I don't use my steering wheel lock, either.  The one time I tried it, I couldn't get the key back out and started to panic.  Eventually was able to wiggle it out.  Never tried it again.
