New guy with lot's of question's
« on: September 22, 2015, 12:07:31 PM »
Hello the fire!

Mind if I set for a while?

A little bit about my self.  I haven't owned an atv for many years and the ones I did own were for my kids to mostly ride down at the sand dunes at Little Sahara State Park in Oklahoma.  My kids are grown now and have go fast 2wd sport quads and still go down to the park 5-6 times a year.  I have owned full size 4x4's for 30 years and have been wheeling them in KS, OK, CO, UT, NV, AZ, NM, WY, MT.  I try to go out west once a year.  Right now my 4x4's are old and have trouble making the trip out there and eat a lot of fuel to get there and back.  I have been looking for something newer.  One of the things I am considering is a OHV I can tow behind my car on a small trailer.  I was at the KS State fair and talk to a bunch of folks and looked at a Z800 and a Polaris Ace.

My question is if folks are using any of the CFMOTO stuff to do trails out in CO and UT and just what are the limits of the machines?  One trail that I have in mind is Hole In The Rock south of Halls Crossing UT.  Hear is a link for the trail:    http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=100  Another that comes to mind is Holy Cross in Colorado:  http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=11  These 2 trails would be high end of what I want to do.  It would also be nice to go down to the sand dunes with my sons again.  Not looking to keep up with them but would like to be able to go most places with out much trouble.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I'm going down to Moab with my Z Force 600 EX next weekend, I'll let you know how it goes!

As far as the Polaris ACE is concerned, I think it's a cool vehicle, and it'd be easy to tow. I felt a little cramped when I sat in one, but I have really long legs.

Either the ACE or the Z Force ought to get you up and down most any trail with ease, but OHV's tend to have trouble climbing big ledges.  Axles get broken that way.  You may have width restrictions on some ATV trails that would keep out the Z Force, but the ACE is narrow enough to not have to worry about that.

Thank you for the reply.  I'll look for your report.

Why do axles break?  Is it when bouncing, under wide open throttle, or something else?

Yep, and applying a lot of power to a CV joint that is already near it operational limits on angle such as with the wheels turned or with lift kits...ect.

Thank you for the info.  In my 4x4 travels I have wheeled cv axle vehicles.  My driving style is such that I use as little skinny pedal as I can and will try different lines or even a well placed rock or piece of wood.  And if all that fails I like the winch that comes standard on the Z800.

I have read on the forum about coil spacer lifts and your info would seem to match my understanding that some of the cv failure in full size 4x4's are due to cranking torsion bars and putting the cv put of it's limits.  The spacer's woud do the same thing.

I was worried that break over angle might be an issue and there could have been a problem with being high centered on the edge of the ledge.

I like to go really slow on technical sections and have installed second low range boxes in my full size 4x4's.  I have read on this forum about shimming the variable drive.  And I have seen on tv where there are reduction units for the Polaris at the wheels.

If I should repost in another area of the forum, please let me know.  Thanks again.

There are gear reduction hub lifts (portal boxes) for some Polarises. They keep your axles at a better angle and lower your gearing so it relieves stress on the axles. That would make a Polaris seem better for your type of riding. However, Polarises have dry clutches, which makes it a lot easier to burn a belt. Most RZRs don't have engine braking either. I believe the Ace does. Stronger axles are also available for Polarises but not currently for CF Motos. I don't know if Polaris has changed anything recently, but not long ago they had week front drives that would break easily. People use these types of vehicles for your type of riding all the time with success, but it usually requires lots of upgrades. We hope that Super ATV will offer a Rhino axle for CF Motos, soon.

I can say they've implemented some sort of EBS on my 900 S.  I honestly don't know how it functions, but I don't think it's true EBS.  I think it's the clutching, but when you're on any kind of downgrade you'll get thrown forward if you're not controlling the throttle.  Whatever it actually is - it needs some work to function properly, but it certainly slows you down.

My dad has a RZR 800. It's geared so low in low range that you can give it just enough gas to engage the clutch and crawl down some really steep hills very slowly. As soon as you take your foot off the gas, it goes to neutral and free wheels.
