Gday guys from the land down under n.s.w Australia cf X400 LE
« on: August 20, 2016, 10:26:20 AM »
Hey guyz,

Im the new owner of a cfmoto X400 LE was looking at buying a quad for a while mainly for my hunting activities and work purposes as I do alot of country work on properties.A few mates have the polaris, hondas and Yamaha for the price and the fact of this machine being new and with warranty also the awesome features it came with i fell in love, my mates were like warning me against it being a chinese made quad but quickly changed their minds once they laid there eyes on this beauty and actually riding the best they were impressed as i was myself.

Its only done 50kms now the only problem I found with it after the first ride was initially the gear shifting was hard but learnt that I had to really jump on the foot brake to get the shifter to move smoothly also noticed a few drops of coolant underneath after the ride.

I understand that it can do with a foot brake pedal adjustment to free up the gear shifter alittle but unfortunately the manual CFMOTO provide is useless and theres not much info out there as yet so any advise would be much appreciated.

Other than that love the machine all round would love to get these small issues rectified, I found the dealer is not really interested even though its under warranty.

That sucks that the dealer didn't want to fix it for you. But it shouldn't be to tough if it just needs a small adjustment. Remove the tank skin, remove the left side panel, and you should see the cable driven lock near the shifter lever. Hopefully it can be adjusted by moving it a thread or two away from the locking plate on the linkage.
The coolant leak is something I have seen the guys talking about before. It may ware in and stop on its own or it may need to be taken in to have the seal replaced.
Hope this helps, good luck!

It's like the CanAm issue with shifting, it gets better as you use it. Just hitches every so often, but it'll get smooth eventually.

Thanks guys for your responses, much appreciated.
Ive had a look under the foot pedal and I can see that it controls a cable and a shaft of some sort.
Im taking it from what Ive read that the cable is what allows the gear shifter to move and engage the gears.
I have also experienced on the last ride the low gear not engaging properly if at all and when it does has popped out of gear after 20 metres or so when riding? I take it that would also have something to do with the cable adjustment?
So I understand one would make the adjustment from near the shifter not from the near the foot pedal itself?
Thanks for all your advise guys this forum is amazing just wish their was more X400 LE owners out there.
Will attempt the adjustment myself if the the dealer keeps stuffing me around as the Quad is a few months old.
Also some have advised that it might soften up itself after a while will keep you posted.

The problem im seeing is that when i push the pedal down while looking at that cable is that it seems not to move what so ever?
The only thing that does have any movement is the spring that is attached to the cable and also the shaft.
Have a look at the pics and see what you can make of it.
Thanks.

It's starting to sound like the shifter is out of alignment. It could potentially cause both your problems making it miss low range and hang on the shifter lock.

Hello Tez and welcome to the forum.
Definatley sounds like the cable adjustment, having to push harder on the brake is a good indication. Have you tried a bit of lube on the cable too? The shifting rod may need a bit of adjustment to make sure it is in gear properly.
What dealer are you using?

Hello and welcome, this is a common problem on the 550,450, 400 as the sistem is the same. Its not only the brake cable adjustment, the gear selector inside the gear box is tight as it works with springs and gear selector. You can check the brake cable pin on the shifter and see if its really to out. It has a welded nut on the shifter base and the another wich blocks the cable pin. There are very tight so be carfull to loose them. You can pull back the pin a bit, so you don't need to step on the brake pedal so much. The low gear could be a shifter linkage adustment, but give it a time to breake in before you make any adjustment. Lubricate all the moving parts on the shifter to get better results. Here some pic'sss
