Even though I believe my shim mod was sound and only failed due to the nut backing off, I still didn't want to take a chance on it again. But, I can't afford to get my primary machined or right now even sliders. I also want some low gearing for my kind of riding. I came up with a fix that I hope will be stronger than stock, but I still got even lower gearing than with the shim. Here's what I did.

My old cam plate didn't strip completely. It backed off and sheared the splines from the inside half, all the way around. But the splines still remained on the outside half. I cut the center out and ground the side with splines flat and smooth. Then I ground the other side all the way down to the splines and down to 1mm thickness. I ground it as round as I could. I lined up the splines with the splines on my new cam plate and welded it in. I tried to make sure it was as smooth and well balanced as possible. I thin put the CVT back together. This did the same job as the shim, but with more splines to mesh instead of less. I got even lower gearing this time, about 3.4:1.

Here is a pick of the shim.

Sorry, I didn't get anymore pics. Once I get started on something, I usually don't stop until I'm done. I usually don't take time for pics.

Thanks guys. I rode down the road to my parents house this evening. It seems OK. I used a torque wrench and lock tight this time. If I didn't screw anything else up, it should be good. The clearance is tight between the belt and case, but it has a little space. It will get closer with wear. I'll have to check it from time to time.

Hope it works out for you.  Like i said with your previous post i have never seen a shim be a good long term solution but then again i have never seen anyone weld the shim on the plate either so who knows.   Keep us posted on how you come out on it.

Sure thing. If it isn't storming, I'm going for a ride tomorrow. I don't see a problem with my design, but it's possible I could have screwed something up. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Took a ride a couple of weeks ago. I ripped up some mud holes and slung some gravels. So far, it's holding up good.

I think with it welded to it you should be fine.  It COULD strip it over the long haul but it would likely be from abuse/putting the machine where it shouldnt be and not using your head to get it out.  Im not saying you will do that im just saying it looks like a strong fix and normal use of the machine I would think it will hold up ok.

I like to play a little, like I said, ripping up mud and slinging gravel. But, I'm not nearly as rough on it as a lot of people. I do know throttle control and rarely go WOT.
