Z6 Reverse light and updated sensor
« on: July 23, 2016, 02:02:42 PM »
Is your reverse light on regardless of what gear your in and the rev limiter is engaged? Here is a how to on fixing the problem.

Why did this happen?
The old sensor is too tall and the top was broken off by the parking brake bracket. Sensor works by ungrounding the lead when in reverse telling the ecu to turn on the rev limiter.

Option #1
Ground the lead going to the sensor, bypassing the sensor and reverse light will never come on again.

Option #2
Replace the sensor with the updated part that is lower profile.

1. Remove the seats

2. Remove the trim around the parking brake

3. Remove the plastic that sits behind both seats. Push pins and some bolts here

4. Remove the broken off terminal from inside the sensor lead.

4a. You can just ground it now and call it good if you like.

5. Remove the old sensor. You can get a box end wrench on it. Try under the bracket, angled back.

6. Install updated sensor

7. Attach tail of new sensor to sensor lead. If it goes in easy, you may want to pull the plastic cover off and squeeze the ring smaller to get a solid connection.

8. Place extra wire in wire holder to the rear passenger side of bracket. Make sure to leave some slack.

9. Confirm that it works and reinstall plastics.

Hi, just joined this forum today after finding your post yesterday and wanted to say a massive thanks as I found it incredibly useful.  I was out off roading and this happened, had to drive the 6+ miles home at 11mph!!  Gutted as I bought this vehicle new only 6 weeks ago.  Still, back on the road now thanks to your post.
