No detent on shock Knob
« on: November 11, 2018, 02:38:05 PM »
I have been trying to get my compression knob de-tent working on my Z800 rear shock. I have removed the shock and the knob, sprayed it with WD40 tapped on it and nothing will get it to pop out. I would think with nothing holding it in if I compress the shock it would pop out but it doesn't. Apparent it is stuck all the way in because it's really hard to compress the shock. Anyone have a fix for this?

The detent on the adjuster is just a ball and spring against notches on the knob. It does get stuck in it's track sometimes or the detents get ripped out of the knob. Usually a little WD or PB will get it loose but the newer ones are built differently then the old ones in that they don't have as many clicks/detents or revolutions as the old ones did. The adjuster is just a needle valve. Turn it to the right to close and left to open. It will work regardless of the clicker but how many turns do you have between closed and fully open?

I think my is different than yours. Mine has a little rod that goes through a hole sideways and pushes on the needle valve. The detent is the rod against  the knob. The needle valve is stuck in and won't come out against the rod. I'm not worried about the detent but the needle valve being stuck in is holding it at max compression.  Here is a pic.
Also I guess I was logged in on a different user name when I posted that. :-X :o

Oh..F'k...well, that's a new one. Yes, you have the new system. somehow...some way..that valve has to get backed-out.Does that end cap come off or unscrew?

It sure doesn't look like it comes off. I tried backing it off with a chisel and it won't turn. It doesn't look dirty or corroded at all. I've been soaking it with WD40,, digging at it with a pick and pounding the mount against my bench to try and jar it loose. Nothing is working. >:(

How does the knob work..ie what does it turn? How is is supposed to move that valve in and out?

The knob threads on like a cap and pushes the little rod against the valve.  This is the whole head assembly. . There are notches inside the knob that the little cross rod sits in to make the detent.

That is the damnedest thing... Well, I guess somehow the valve is stuck into the seat so somehow it has to get pried out of it.

Maybe something from both sides...couple of small sharpened screwdrivers to get a bite..and some wiggle and some prying action. Maybe even try to spin it with a little side-tap upwards. Just throwing-out thoughts. A new shock is BS expensive for a Chinese shock.

Well I bought it used in July. First the guy said it was a 2018. Then on my 75 Mile drive to get it he called and said he looked at his papers and realized it was a 2017. So he came down $500. He seemed very sincere about it and was a very nice guy. He told me he bought it Spring of 18. I transferred ownership to me and thought I would have warranty until next spring. But it turns out he bought it late October 17. So I think warranty is over. I will call a dealer tomorrow to double check.

I'm not giving up yet. I'll double check warranty tomorrow. If no warranty I may try a little heat.

Well I found out Monday from a dealer 150 miles way that my warranty expired that day. Of course the dealer by me is closed on Mondays. I took it to them on Tuesday and they said they would try to get CFmoto to cover it. When they never called me back I called them and they told me that cfmoto said it was an impact damage and denied it. They said they would try again and now called and told me they will cover it :). They said it will take about five days to get the part and about two days to get it done. I didn't want to tell them that it's a five minute job to swap the shock.
While I was at the dealer I looked at some Can-ams. Man are they built. The rear shock is about three feet long with a huge remote reservoir and about a six inch spring. That thing has got to be $1000  https://imgur.com/62ALxWR
