So, if you're tired of the ugly long shifter in your bike there's an easy fix.

I went to our local machine shop and had him thread the shift shaft all the way down to the base, drove my machine home, took the shift knob off, measured the inner shaft length, and cut the outer shaft to desired length with a dermal. be careful not to cut the innermost shaft yet.

Once the outer shift shaft is threaded and cut to desired length, cut inner shaft the same length measured earlier. Round off the end of the inner shaft with a dremal and some sand paper. This is the result!

Great picture, great mod, it gives it a much cleaner appearance.

My eyes continuously went back and forth from the shifter to the shotgun.... couldn't determine if it was the water on it or the memories of a similar old single barrel years ago...either way thanks for sharing a great mod and for bringing back great memories.

Haha thanks! I was hunting on a rainy day. Here in Northern Maine it rains often so it can't stop us. Lol. Shotgun is a 40 year old Stevens single shot 20 gauge. I shot it with wd40 when I got home and wiped it all off.

I was going through tsbs and ran across one that replaces short shifters with long ones. I think 2012 had shorter ones.

Does anyone know what size tap is needed to do this mod.. Everything I have is for sae ....I don't want to buy a metric set. And I can borrow the size I need.

I'm not sure what size. The metal is soft and cheap die set will so the job. They are worth having if you just need to clean up the end of a bolt that is buggered up.

Funny I took to heart what you said about just buying a metric tap & die kit.
It was just my luck that it did not have the right size in the kit...LOL
I think the threads are a 12mm 1.25 pitch.
Will be looking for that size over the weekend.
