Battery Terminal connections
« on: July 08, 2019, 03:06:49 PM »
Hi all from the UK

Z8 - Battery replacement - I have taken the old one off and despite taking a photo still have managed to not be able to see how the 4 cables attach to the terminals. there seem to be three RED and one black? I think 2 are for the winch and 2 are for the ignition - would anyone please advise? I've ordered a new battery and am concerned about getting the connections right.

Many thanks!

Well, stock it came with one negative or ground, black in color cable that goes the engine case. Then there are the positives. There is one main battery lead cable which runs to the starter solinoid, then a smaller one that supplies power to all the accessories and components which is fused under the seat with a 30 amp fuse, then one larger cable to the winch controller for winch motor power. All these should be red as a primary color.

Thanks so much - I think I'm clear now 3x positives and one negative. My confusion came today when I tried this configuration with the old battery (it's 'dead/replace' according to the tester but there's still some life in it) and although it powered the winch, I got nothing from the ignition - no dash lights or anything....

Thanks again for your help

Then check that 30amp fuse under the seat.

should be 2 grounds that go directly to the battery. Larger gage cables, one for winch and one that goes to chassis (or engine, can't remember). Sounds like you forgot one.

My winch ground doesn't go back to the battery. It just goes to the engine case. where the other one is-front of the belt cover. But..it really should go all the way back. Maybe the newer ones do.

Wow this should be so straightforward.... Here are my cables I'm pretty sure they are correct - 3 positive (labelled 1,2,3) and 1 ground (black labelled 4)

However, the winch works but no ignition so whilst messing with this Ive now blown a fuse. Manual once again says the fuses are where I can't see them! Either "In front of steering column" or next to battery. I can't see them in either place!

Sorry but if someone has an idea where to look and perhaps which one to replace that would be great. My son is off school and stamping his feet for a drive!

Thanks guys

As I already mentioned. You are missing a ground cable. I can see the ground you currently have identified goes into a common harness with a positive... that’s for the winch. How about hooking up this ground wire.

Wow I can’t believe I’ve missed that!  trying to mess around in a dark garage with a phone for light.

All good now - thanks very much!
