Bad Fuel Tank Vent Check Valve Option
« on: September 24, 2016, 12:48:17 PM »
One option for a leaking check valve on fuel tank vent:

Depending on your region, your system will either have an EVAP system or not. Mine does not...so....

When on rough rides in lots of woops I noticed a strong raw fuel smell. I discovered the tank vent check valve which is supposed to only allow air to be pulled in as the pump takes fuel out, was not sealing the other way allowing fumes and raw fuel to be sent up the vent tube and into the frame where it terminates. Parts diagram does not show this check valve replaceable by itself. So the only option is to either replace the tank or install an inline check valve. I elected to install an inline check valve and a filter to stop particles from getting to the tank and the new check valve.

I elected to use a small aluminum-bodied check with steel check with a spring so position, fuels or time wouldn’t have an effect on its long-term operation and a small inline fuel filter placed just before it.

Getting to the line meant removing the air box which also means removing the interior plastics. These two pic shows where it comes out of the tank and the hole in the frame where it originally went to and where I ended up placing it.

Just installed it on the end. Test it at this point to ensure the valve is going the right way. You should be able to blow air through it but not suck any back:

And just slipped the assembly over the frame and secured it to the top frame rail as shown so I can get to it if ever needed.

Also in this pic you can see the dirt collection on the residue from the fuel being doused in this area. A tell-tale sign of a problem:

After seeing these pics I decided to relocate the outer tie to go around the filter instead of the leader hose but that’s it. I decided on this location as it was the farthest from the wheels tossing dust up in that area and its ease to get to if ever needed like if I need to take the end to the top of a snorkel or replace the filter. I did test the line with over a pound of pressure to ensure the line would stay on the tank’s check valve nipple and it did so I believe it’s safe.

UPDATE 9/28/16

Had it out for a test run. 99.9% of the gas smell is gone What smell was left smelled like old gas and became less as the miles went on. I assume the frame is full of fuel so I am guessing this is where it's coming from. No sign of anything in the filter or coming out the end of the leader tube or anywhere below.
