ZForce 1000 wont start
« on: January 24, 2022, 02:09:46 PM »
Hi -

I have a 2018 ZForce 1000 that I keep on some land that I own, I'm usually out there every other weekend. However I just had a child, my wife and I have not been out there in months, and the ATV has just been sitting. I finally made it up there this past weekend, started it and it wouldn't turn over, it didn't even sound like the starter turned over at all, no click or attempt at turning over. So I charged the battery, tried again, same issue. I even jumped it to make sure it was getting the power it needed in case the battery was just holding enough charge for the display.

I can't troubleshoot until I am up there again, but I figured I'd ask in here and see if this was something known. I took a short video of the issue here:

It was cold this past weekend, but I did  attempt to start it when it was around 36 degrees, before I left. Same issue. Anything I can do to diagnose it next time I am up?

Always leave them for long periods on a battery tender. Check all the fuses first. Charge the battery completely...and that will take many hours, run it through the gears once, put your foot on the brake and try it. If nothing pull the main fuse and re-install. If still nothing load test the battery. Yeah that means pulling it. Good time to check the cables though. It may have been dead or too low for too long or even froze once. Another good reason for using a tender..keeping the battery charged and active in cold temps.

Thats a good tip! I'll buy a tender now just to prevent issues in the future. I'll try shifting through the gears also.

So I did trickle charge it over night (doesn't have a tending option), then applied jumper cables to the battery the next day when it wouldn't start. The charger said it was fully charged, but who knows - thats why I jumped it also. You don't think that was enough power to rule out the battery? I only ask because I know these operate a little differently than cars, of which I probably would have ruled that issue out with a car.

I didn't see any dash lights dim when you hit the starter position nor here the fuel pump. Makes me think kill switch or an interlock relay. That's why the gear shit movement and brake. Work that kill switch too. They are not water proof and if any got down inside contacts will be corroded.

I am not sure how these machines tolerate jump starting.  I have seen more than a few jump starts end badly with ATVs.   I would probably recommend avoiding that practice.   Low and slow works out better with a powersports battery IMHO.

I experienced this 2 or 3 weeks ago on my 800. Talked to dealer and had me the high beams relay and place it in the starter slot and try to start it. I tried that and nothing so I placed it in starter 2 slot and it started right up. I then took the bad one and put back in high beam relay and high beams still worked.
Dealer told me they have had quiet a few so this. They gave me a new relay and told me they weren’t sure if there was a bad batch or relays or what but that worked for mine. Look into that. Couldn’t hurt
