Windsheild Build....Like I said, I like to build STUFF
« on: September 30, 2020, 12:29:12 PM »
Started the build on a flip down windsheild for my Uforce 500. So far just started the template. Going to use 1/4" Polycarbonate, a living hinge, and whatever else it takes to get er done. Going to cost about half of buying one ready made, but I have the time and desire to build it. My buddy next door and I bought identical Uforce 500s about two weeks ago and he is my partner in crime on this. We bounce ideas off each other and usually come up with a workable  plan. Will be cutting the Polycarbonate on Saturday if it arrives.

Only saving about $100-$150 bucks, but love the challenge. The template is a better fit than the image shows. Will be using a soft rubber edge on the bottom to seal.

Cut the Polycarbonate for Jim, my partner in crime's scooter. The poly cut easily with an 8 tooth saber saw blade. Clean cuts, no chipping. Am leaving the protective film on during the build. Cut both lower sections of the windsheilds. The living hinge just arrived at beer drinking time, so done for the day. Photo shows both our Uforce 500 carts and my neighbor
Bob's new yeller cart in driveway.

Good start!
I also enjoy making my own stuff!
I did my windshield with a hinge as well.
I also used the scratch resistant plexi, more expensive but will last for years without scratches if cleaned properly.

Keep up the good work!

Nice ride and windshield. Lot of satisfaction in doing it yourself isn't it. Stan

Finished up the windshields yesterday. Cost about $150 ish. Did not attempt to heat and bend the top 2 inches of the folding part to stiffen it up. Tried to heat bend on a piece of scrap but saw blisters, so added a piece of 2" aluminum at the top. Added trim molding around the lower and sides of the upper. Added a little stop in the middle on the dash for the lower half. This stops all buffeting from strong winds.

The consentious of this build: Jim and I are satisfied with what we accomplished. We had a lot of fun designing, fixing our errors and installing this windshield. We drank a bunch of beer, talked like we knew what we were doing, and decided that saving a hundred and fifty bucks per windshield was not worth the effort. We conclude that our best course of action was to buy and install a windshield, and spend the same amount of time that we spent on the build on drinking beer.

Yeah..almost a 100 in total. Took me a while to clean and delete all them and their accounts. Spam is really a problem these days.

Atta boy! Good job, good craftsmanship. I'm a shortie (5'8") so I'd have made the bottom piece a bit lower so the break is below my sight line, that's what I get for skipping the wheaties. :)

Thanks all for the comments. Was fun but wouldn't do it again to save a few bucks. I did build a rear flip seat a few years ago for a golf cat, but again not really worth the effort. I like short projects though.

Just a side note: since we added the windshield we notice a big increase in the amount of heat coming in the cabin especially on the drivers side. Probably due more to air flow over the windshield causing a vacuum and drawing up heat from engine compartment. When it turns cooler here that won't be a problem, but when it's 90 out, .....whew

Probaby investigage some heat blanket stuff and wrapping the exchaust pipe for starters. Suggestions anyone?

A bit from many places probably like my Z. The firewall plastics and the dash & fender plastics on it have a huge gap all the way around it ..even down the fenders so all the heat off the radiator just poured in after the windshield. Fixed that with some long strips of 3"x3" memory foam off a mattress topper we didn't use anymore. Then a little shield over the hole for the steering linkage...then some heat shield on the tunnel cover and back plastics as well as stuff some of that foam in the hundred or so holes around inside the cab. Got it down to an acceptable level...and quieted it up a bit too.

I've been going to insulate the front of the cab, but my wife really likes the heat that comes in.  Well, she likes it most of the time, but sometimes she tells me it's to hot.  I've told her that she can't have it both ways, either have more heat or less heat...  I guess we've opted for more heat.
