why would....
« on: May 07, 2023, 12:41:25 PM »
A new cf moto battery stop charging? 12 hrs on whip, it's been plugged in to a yuasa battery Charger from new... rode the quad yesterday around the block a few times... and put it away. Noticed today that it's still in the yellow indicating charging... not the green typical from other times...

No big deal I have a 7yr battery deal with the dealership. More just curiosity than anything.

Enjoy your day all!

They just don't make them like they used to. Used to you could get sometimes years more out of them then they said but today only about 75-78% make it to the projected mark..whether it's a 24,36 or 48 month. The rest fall short...some don't even make it out the door. Open cells mostly..or shorted plates. One big thing that happens at home is people still use a trickle charger over a smart charger. They never shut off...even some smart chargers don't completely. I have one I stopped using because of that. This runs the water out and exposes the plates causing sulfation and damage. Sometimes...you can bring one back for a while if you re-fill with distilled water and put on a 750 milliamp charger for a few days. I had one that took a week but it came back good as ever.

I just tested the batt. According to the shop man I should have 14.4 v and I have 13.8 so no worries... there I guess. Thanks again

You should have 14.2-14.7 VDC when the engine is charging above 2500rpm. If it's only 13.8, there is something wrong...and it could be a bad battery...or a failing stator coil. Have the battery load tested. Take it to most any auto parts place..they do that here so maybe there too.

And it has been my obvservation that the Charging system on the 800XC at least is not weak nor regulated to "just above the bikes requirements".
the other? Lousy batteries? Yes.
"Back in the day" if you were hard up you could scrounge around a junk yard and find a ten year old battery and run it for a couple more years with ease.
Now if a new battery gives you two solid years, let alone three, count yourself lucky.
pay ten times what it's worth and get half the life if your exceptionally fortunate.

Battery is junk.

12.9 v with the load tester, and 15 seconds under load put it to 11 or so in the weak yellow range.
So ya time to replace. Truth be told the dealer said the cf battery was shit. And gave me the 7 yr battery deal where if any battery goes south, doesn't matter how many batteries it eats I just bring it back and get a new yuasa battery.
