Weep Hole leak on Water Pump
« on: July 18, 2023, 05:07:33 PM »
Hey All,  Been a while since I have been on here.  I have a 2018 800 Trail with 1100 original put on by me miles.  99% are dirt roads and the rest my wife uses to go into town when we camp to pick up groceries.  A few weeks ago we were doing a 150 mile out and back dirt road from the camp site to an old mining town.  Got back, packed it up in the toy hauler and headed home.  Unloaded it.  Came back two days later to wash it off and found about a 1/3 of a cup of coolant on the shop floor.  It came from the water pump weep hole tube.  Is it from the altitude change?  Or do I need to swap out the seal?

Its a common issue with 2018 and older. Some leak from the start but quit in a hundred miles or so-others start later and don't stop. If you have not changed the coolant to a quality-"non-Chinese coolant", do so and add about 1/8 cup of water pump lubricant. This will help fill the pitting and imperfections of the two surfaces of the mechanical seal and help it seal again. If that doesn't stop it, it means its damaged enough that it needs replaced. Mine was one that leaked from the start but quit when I changed the coolant to Peak. Then in 800 miles it started again and quit when I added the water pump lubricant. It's got 2200 on it now and I only get a drop every once-in-a-while starting about 200 miles ago. My time is coming..maybe I'll give it another shot of lube...lol

This is what I used but there are others cheaper:

Thanks NMK.  I appreciate your expertise and experience.  I still get a lot of looks and comments about the air intake and CVT cooling stacks I copied from you.
