transporting
« on: April 11, 2023, 08:53:13 PM »
Good evening
I was researching different setups to move my 800 in the back of my truck. I landed on what I thought was going to be a good idea then I saw this https://youtu.be/hlfZHd-wXhc

And my world crumbled. Not really.
My question is if it supported underneath by a block of wood and tightend down to stop the " surge " effect like they talk about would it be ok in your view to continue using the winch to secure the rig for transport?

This is how I would propose  to do it , with two big blocks of wood for each wheel to stand the bike off of the front of the bed.

Thoughts?
Thanks have a great evening

Well this probably wont help you. I use the winch to pull my 800 up on the trailer. I have tire wraps or whatever to hold it in. I loosen the load off the winch for that reason in the video

In my opinio you should not use your winch as a means to tie down your machine.  The winch is designed for a static load not a shock load.
The video has an represenative from Warn winch I would pay attention to him.
But it is your machine and you are the one responsible for it.

I 100% agree. The winch should never be used to secure any machine to a moving object in any way, shape or form. Use the correct devices to tie it down. The tire straps or bonnet straps are always the #1 choice as it will allow the suspension to move and absorb the motion and impacts.. and at all four points. Always better safe...then sorry. :)

Heard and understood.
This is what I ended up doing

Straps are 1000# load 3000# break. I just cut the plastic skid pan so it wouldn't crush and the strap sits against the frame. The hooks go to one of the holes on each side of the hitch.
Thanks to all that chimed in I appreciate it.

Maybe strap it in and take for a test run. I had mine when I bought it like that is everything came loose. I have a 800 with a 10 ft trailer so that only leaves inches and it was rocking back/forth. Could also be the straps I was using.

I started using ShockStrap rachet straps a couple of years ago when I switched over to a trailer vice pickup bed.  They are somewhat expensive but as far as I'm concerned they are worth the cost.  I have never had one of them loosen up even on the roughest roads.
Good video from Rocky Mountain ATV
Can not remember where I bought my first pair, but just purchased another pair from Amazon when I went from the ATV to the UTV>
