Hello I am rebuilding the top end on my 800 engine and noticed it appears as if the base gasket on the cylinders has been installed with some kind of adhesive while the head gasket has no adhesive. Is this the correct way? Also when installing the pistons into the cylinders should I figure a way to compress the rings or should the bevel on the bottom of the cylinders allow the rings to compress on their own or possibly with a little help using my fingers or a non metallic object?

It is common to use a slight amount to gasket sealer like spray High-Tack on all gaskets except the actual head gasket. Never anything but a clean, film-free surfaces there. In the old days with cast iron blocks and heads we did use a sealer like copper coat but no more with al aluminum. You should always use a ring compressor although if the bevel is at least 45 degree and well oiled it may work fine. BE GENTLE. And just be sure you position the ring gaps correctly and that none of them are straight down on the bottom side of the cylinder.

Thank You for the help and your previous reply on the swap out from 800 to 1000. Do they make a special ring compressor for these motors the oe I have is for a auto motor and way too big to fit in the small space allowed? Could I possibly use a zip tie?

Like you I also have the big one for 3.75"+ pistons but also have one of these for smaller engines..especially ones that you drop on the cylinders with little room. I actually catch myself using it for everything.

If you use the ring expander tool..be very careful not to go any farther then necessary to go over the piston. People have broken them by going too much. Beats using your hands but just be cautious.
