Lately the MIL light has been coming on in the dashboard periodicaly on my Uforce 500. It doesn't flash, just a steady light. It usually happens when idling for more than a few minutes or driving slow (under 10 kms). Once I speed up for a bit, the light will go out. Any ideas on what causes it?

There's a procedure that makes it flash a code that can be looked up in the manual but I suspect it may say there is an error on the O2 sensor. At full operating temperature it should be putting out a certain reading within a range but at slow speeds where it cools some it may fall below that range. Just a guess...as some have said they had troubles with some O2 sensors on the 500s. Grab the manual and get the code to be for sure first.

It seems that low coolant was causing it. Because it was only coming on when idling or going slow, I thought maybe it was a heating problem, even though the guage wasn't showing hot. I topped off the radiator and it did take a fair amount. Ran it all day today and the MIL light never came on once. I guess it doubles as a low coolant light also. Now to figure out where the coolant went.

Thanks for the reply NMKawierider.

Good, well, there are several sensors that feed the ECM and several are temperature. I guess if there is something amiss then it gives an error. Good to know. Check your water pump...most are leaning past the mechanical seal and out the weep hole/tube.

I knew the 800's were having the water pump seal problem, are the 500's also having it?

Some. I think it's a seal problem and they use the same seal on several engines.
